EU Parliament sends child abuse bill back to Council after chaotic vote – POLITICO
by Sam Clark · POLITICOSTRASBOURG — The European Parliament on Thursday sent a highly controversial child abuse scanning bill back to EU member governments for approval in a tense vote.
Lawmakers voted to send the bill back to the Council of the EU with changes that would ensure scanning does not take place on end-to-end encrypted services.
Thursday's vote came after Europe’s center-right political group forced a last-ditch attempt to resurrect the regime through a rarely used procedure; lawmakers already rejected the regime in a vote in March. Under Thursday's procedure, members needed at least 361 votes to reject the bill but required only a so-called simple majority — meaning more than half of members present on the day — to pass it.
