Aubrey Plaza's life partner, Jeff Baena, unexpectedly passed away earlier this year. Processing the tragedy, the actress recently made a comment on how she has been dealing with her grief. As Aubrey made her first comment about Jeff's death, here's a look at their relationship and the love they shared with each other. 

Aubrey Plaza and Jeff Baena started dating in 2011 and collaborated in films later 

As per a report by GQ, Aubrey and Jeff met in 2011, during a game of Balderdash. After getting together, the first film that the actress and director duo worked on together was Life After Beth. Interestingly, it was Jeff's first film as a director. Aubrey, in an interview with Vulture, stated that her then-boyfriend had never given her a script and said to act. However, for this film, the actress felt that it was the perfect role for her after reading the script. Talking about working with her beau, Jeff, Aubrey revealed:

"I was like, we’re either going to break up or stay together forever. It was great, he’s a great director and that didn’t surprise me either because his brain is operating on another level — he’s too smart and he’s got so many opinions, and he’s a very confident person that always knows what he wants."

In 2017, Aubrey Plaza was the producer also starred as the main lead in The Little Hours, directed by Jeff Baena. The actress also mentioned how amazing an experience it was to work with her partner and watch him grow and evolve in his craft. In an interview with People, Aubrey also said being with someone from the same field made them support each other's journeys. Talking about her relationship with the director, Aubrey shared:

“I think that when you’re with someone that is in your field, they understand what you’re dealing with on a deeper level. So obviously you are able to support each other and really understand kind of the journey that we’re both on. So I think that can be really great. But, you know, working with your partner can always be challenging. There’s a lot of things we do separately and I think that it’s all about balance."

Aubrey Plaza and Jeff Baena tied the knot in 2021, without any fanfare. People got to know about their marital status when Aubrey called Jeff her 'darling husband' in an Instagram post. Later the actress's representative confirmed this news to several news protal. In Drew Barrymore's chat show, Aubrey talked about her quaint and 'witch core' wedding and how they both wore tie-dye shirts to the ceremony that happened in their backyard. The actress revealed:

“So we got married on a whim, literally decided at around 5 pm and got married at 8 PM. So Jeff got really into tie dying during the quarantine, so I decided that Jeff and I were going to wear tie dye pajamas that he had made for us. We wore tie dye pajamas and then I had my little rosemary crown. I made like a love altar in the backyard, of all of our love objects, it was very witch core but it happened."

Jeff Baena unexpectedly passed away at the age of 47 on January 3, 2025, by suicide reportedly. The whole industry was left in shock and expressed their heartfelt condolances. After a month of his demise, Aubrey paid a tribute to her late husband while hosting SNL50. The actress had previously mentioned that her late husband was really into tie dye and they had even worn those t-shirts to their wedding.
