What was the cause of Anthony Geary's sudden demise at 78? 

Initially, the exact cause of death of Anthony Geary was not disclosed in the media. Still, later, TV Insider reported that he died due to complications from a surgical procedure performed three days earlier. None of his family members or Claudio expected it to happen. Claudio, in an emotional statement, described how the loss came as a shock to him. Yet, he highlighted how Anthony's presence was a constant source of love and companionship in his life. General Hospital's executive producer, Frank Valentini, issued a tribute praising Anthony's talent and lasting legacy. In his words:

He played the iconic role of 'Luke Spencer' on General Hospital in 1978, making a major contribution to rescuing the show from cancellation. Needless to say, he transformed it into a cultural phenomenon.

During his stint on the show, Anthony's on-screen pairing with Genie Francis's 'Laura' created one of the most popular on-screen couples in the history of TV. Especially the episode of their wedding in 1981 drew nearly 30 million viewers, making it the most-watched episode of a soap opera in history. Anthony won a record 8 Daytime Emmy Awards and 16 nominations. Apart from General Hospital, Anthony appeared in films and television, but 'Luke Spencer' remained his career-defining role.
