Idrissa Gueye Speaks As AFCON Final Decision Strips Senegal Of Title
by Ernest Victor · Naija NewsIdrissa Gana Gueye has expressed his unhappiness with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) ‘s decision to overturn the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final result, a move that hands the title to Morocco and strips Senegal of their status as African champions.
Naija News reports that the ruling brings a dramatic end to what had been a celebratory moment for Senegal, which believed it had secured continental glory on the night in Rabat. Instead, the outcome has been reversed, triggering widespread reaction across the football world.
Gueye, who captained Senegal during the final, addressed the situation in a series of posts on his Instagram story earlier today, March 18. He said, “Titles, trophies, medals… all of that is only temporary.
“What really matters is that every supporter can go home and be reunited with their family.
“The Senegalese people have shown who they are: dignified in victory, dignified in adversity.
“That is Teranga (Senegalese hospitality and spirit).”
While refraining from an extended critique, the experienced midfielder made clear he disagreed with the decision to overturn the result. He stressed that the emotions and unity felt by the players and supporters on the night cannot be erased.
“We know what we experienced that night in Rabat, and that, no one will ever be able to take away from us, God willing,” he added.
The development has left Senegalese players and fans grappling with the sudden loss of a title they had celebrated, while Morocco are now recognised as champions following the ruling.
Gueye, however, ended on a note of resolve, signalling the team’s determination to respond.
In a separate post, the 36-year-old wrote: “We will bounce back.”
