Goalkeeping Legend Peter Rufai Is Dead

Super Eagles of Nigeria goalkeeping legend, Peter Rufai, has reportedly died.

Naija News gathered that Dodomayana, as he is fondly called, died on Thursday morning.

According to Radio Nigeria, Rufai died after a prolonged illness. He was 61 years.

Confirming his demise, the Super Eagles official 𝕏 handle wrote: “🇳🇬🕊️ Forever in our hearts, Dodo Mayana.

“We mourn the passing of legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, a giant of Nigerian football and a 1994 AFCON champion.

“Your legacy lives on between the sticks and beyond.

“Rest well, Peter Rufai. 💚”

Rufai was widely regarded as of the best goalkeepers Nigeria has produced.

During his playing career that lasted two decades, Rufai played in Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain.

He also represented Nigeria at two World Cups and as many Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.

Naija News reports that this is coming hours after the sudden and tragic death of Liverpool and Portugal attacker Diogo Jota, alongside his 26-year-old younger brother André Silva, who died in a fatal road accident in Spain.
