Gernot Rohr Reveals Benin Republic’s Game Plan Ahead Of Clash With Super Eagles
by Ernest Victor · Naija NewsBenin Republic coach, Gernot Rohr, says his team will stay calm and focused when they take on the Super Eagles of Nigeria in Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
Rohr, who previously managed Nigeria, is no stranger to the city. He led the Super Eagles to several victories at the same ground during his time in charge. Now returning as the opponent, the Franco-German coach admits the atmosphere could be intense but insists his players are prepared for it.
“Yes, the atmosphere can obviously be hostile. But we will try to maintain a certain calm and serenity,” Rohr told Goal. “On the pitch, this will translate into a desire to play the game. We will try to have good possession of the ball. We have a game based on good defence, with counterattacks. This is what we will want to practice in Uyo.”
Benin currently sit top of Group C with 17 points, ahead of South Africa on 15 and Nigeria on 14. A draw in Uyo would be enough to keep the Cheetahs in control of their qualification race.
The team arrived in Uyo on Saturday after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Rwanda on Friday. Rohr has built his side around discipline, patience, and quick transitions, a style that has brought impressive results in recent months.
