Diogo Jota And His Brother To Be Buried Saturday
by Enioluwa Adeniyi · Naija NewsThe final rites for late Liverpool star, Diogo Jota, and his younger brother, André Filipe Teixeira da Silva, will take place at 10 am on Saturday in Gondomar, a town near Portugal’s northern city of Porto.
This followed a delay from the initial Friday schedule due to minor paperwork complications. Local priest, Father José Manuel Macedo, who is coordinating the burial arrangements, confirmed the postponement on Thursday evening.
According to Father Macedo, the funeral proceedings will begin with a wake at São Cosme Chapel, followed by a solemn funeral mass at Igreja Matriz de Gondomar, the main Catholic church in the area.
Gondomar holds emotional value for Diogo Jota. The Portuguese forward began his football journey in the town, having played for a local club before rising to international prominence. It is also believed to be where he met his wife.
Although the family has not formally announced whether the funeral will be private or open to the public, local residents have begun making preparations to pay their respects.
Naija News reports that the deaths of Jota and André in a car accident near Zamora, northwestern Spain, sent shockwaves through the football community on Thursday.
Former Liverpool boss, Jürgen Klopp, club legend Sir Kenny Dalglish, and current head coach, Arne Slot, were among those who led tributes to the 27-year-old forward.
Liverpool teammates took to social media to express their sorrow, remembering Jota for his vibrant personality and devotion to the game.
Midfielder Alexis Mac Allister wrote on Instagram, “I can’t believe it. I will always remember your smiles, your anger, your intelligence, your companionship and everything that made you a person. It hurts a lot, we will miss you. Rest in peace dear Diogo.”
Hungarian international, Dominik Szoboszlai, shared an equally emotional message, “Words cannot describe how heartbroken and devastated we are… Your smile, your love for the game will never be forgotten. We will miss you so much, but you will stay with us forever, on and off the pitch. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family. Rest in peace, brother.”
