Ex-Super Eagles Goalie Daniel Akpeyi Comments On Eric Chelle, Osimhen
by Ernest Victor · Naija NewsFormer Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has heaped praise on head coach Eric Chelle and striker Victor Osimhen following Nigeria’s commanding 4-0 win over the Benin Republic in Uyo, a result that sealed the country’s spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs.
Osimhen was the star of the night, scoring three brilliant goals, while Frank Onyeka added the fourth to complete a statement performance for the Eagles in front of their home fans.
Speaking on SuperSport after the game, Akpeyi said the team looks rejuvenated under Chelle and credited the coach for instilling renewed confidence and purpose among the players.
“Since Eric Chelle came in they’ve been a lot of changes and the players are stepping up,” Akpeyi said.
The former Chippa United shot-stopper also singled out Osimhen for special praise, describing him as the heartbeat of the current squad and the kind of player every successful team needs.
“Whether you like it or not, in every team there is that superstar that you have, which is Victor Osimhen, who has lived up to expectations,” he added.
Akpeyi further pointed out that Osimhen’s stunning display against Benin Republic justifies why Galatasaray would be willing to spend any amount to keep the 26-year-old forward.
“It shows the reason Galatasaray can pay any amount of money to retain him there,” the retired Nigerian international said.
