PSG President Reveals Why Club Lost Club World Cup To Chelsea
by Ernest Victor · Naija NewsParis Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has pointed to player fatigue as a key reason behind the club’s 3-0 defeat to Chelsea in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup final on Sunday night.
The Club World Cup final, which took place at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, United States, on Sunday, ended in bitter disappointment for the French giants as they failed to secure what would have been their fifth trophy in a historic season.
Al-Khelaifi, while clearly disappointed, chose not to dwell on the loss, instead highlighting the toll a demanding season had taken on his youthful squad.
“Congratulations to Chelsea. They deserved their victory,” he told PSG’s official website. “We wanted to win this Club World Cup, but it’s difficult. The players gave their all. They were tired. We had a great season, the best in the club’s history.”
PSG have had a successful year, lifting four major trophies and showcasing a fluid, attacking brand of football under head coach Luis Enrique. But the pace and physical intensity of the final appeared to catch up with the team, with Chelsea exploiting every gap and error with ruthless efficiency.
“We’re proud of the players and the staff,” Al-Khelaifi added. “This defeat is good for us, for next season. We have to be humble. We’re the youngest team in the competition.”
Chelsea’s win marks their second Club World Cup title, solidifying their resurgence under manager Enzo Maresca.
