Nwabali Backs Super Eagles To Win 2025 AFCON In Morocco
by Ernest Victor · Naija NewsSuper Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali says he is confident that Nigeria has what it takes to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, insisting the players are not going to Morocco just to compete but to bring the trophy home.
Naija News reports that the tournament is scheduled to take place in Morocco from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.
Nwabali, who rose to prominence after his outstanding performances at the 2023 AFCON in the Ivory Coast, believes the team’s experience from reaching the final last year has made them stronger and more determined.
“AFCON is one of the biggest tournaments in the world, not just in Africa,” Nwabali said during an interview on SuperSport TV.
“As a big nation, we are always expected to win, not just to participate. Playing the final last year, I feel this year we are going to win it.”
The Super Eagles last lifted the AFCON trophy in 2013 under the late Stephen Keshi, adding to their earlier triumphs in 1980 and 1994.
Despite coming close again last year, Nigeria fell 2-1 to hosts Ivory Coast in a tense final that left fans heartbroken.
Nwabali’s heroics in that tournament turned him into a fan favourite, but his recent form has sparked debate among supporters.
The Chippa United goalkeeper has been criticised for errors and time-wasting tactics that led to unnecessary bookings during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Even so, the 28-year-old remains upbeat and focused on the bigger picture. Before the AFCON, Nigeria will have to get through the African playoffs to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Head coach Eric Chelle is expected to announce his squad for the crucial playoff fixtures soon. Nwabali is likely to face stiff competition from Udinese’s Maduka Okoye, who is returning to the national setup after a lengthy absence.
