New details emerging Tuesday have bolstered authorities’ belief that Nancy Gurthrie, the missing 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie, was the victim of a kidnapping.
The Los Angeles Times reported that authorities in Pima County, Arizona found blood inside Nancy Guthrie’s home after she was reported missing Sunday, though it’s not clear whose blood it was or where inside the home it was found. Sources also told the Los Angeles Times that there were signs of forced entry in the home, located in an upscale neighborhood north of Tucson.
On Monday, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos told news outlets that the widow and grandmother didn’t leave her home willingly and may have been forcibly taken in the middle of the night.
“I believe she was abducted, yes,” Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos told CBS News Monday afternoon “She didn’t walk from there. She didn’t go willingly.”
At a Monday news briefing, Nanos also said: “We do in fact have a crime scene; we do in fact have a crime.”
Nancy Guthrie’s family reported her missing on Sunday after they went to her home after being alerted that she failed to show up at church that morning, according to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department. All of her personal belongings, including her wallet, cellphone and car, were still at the home, but she was nowhere to be found, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Nancy Guthrie was last seen at about 9:30 p.m. Saturday, when she was dropped off at her Catalina Foothills residence following a dinner with her daughter, Annie, Savannah Guthrie’s sister, Page Six reported. Annie is thought to be the last person to see her mother before her disappearance.
Authorities have not publicly theorized on why Nancy Guthrie was abducted, and Nanos said the department was not aware of any specific threats to Savannah Guthrie that might be related to her mother’s disappearance, the Los Angeles Times reported. Savannah Guthrie has co-anchored the NBC morning news show since 2012.
Nanos raised concerns that Nancy Guthrie was in immediate danger because she suffers from health conditions for which she needs daily medication.
“This is an 84-year-old lady who suffers from some physical ailments, has some physical challenges, is in need of some medication,” Nanos said. “Medication that if she doesn’t have in 24 hours, it could be fatal.”
Nanos also has emphasized that this wasn’t the case of an elderly person with dementia wandering away from her home. He said Nancy Guthrie was “sharp as a tack.” At the same time, she had physical limitations that would have made it impossible for her to walk very far on her own.
“She did not leave on her own, we know that,” he said. “She’s very limited in her mobility.”
Nanos also confirmed that detectives had transitioned their investigation from a missing person case to a criminal case, according to the Los Angeles Times.
On Tuesday morning, Savannah Guthrie asked her followers on Instagram to “please pray” for her mother.
In a lengthy caption, she wrote, “We believe in prayer. we believe in voices raised in unison, in love, in hope. we believe in goodness. we believe in humanity. above all, we believe in Him.”
Savannah Guthrie is believed to be in Tucson, her hometown, while authorities search for her mother. She didn’t appear on Monday’s “Today” show.
Page Six also reported that she is likely pulling out from co-anchoring NBC’s coverage of the Winter Olympics. She was due to be in Italy Friday for the start of the 2026 Games, which take place Feb. 6 to Feb. 22 in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo.
“There is no way she will be there,” a source told Page Six.
