Tom Holland Is Your Friendly Neighborhood Nobody in Spider-Man: Brand New Day

by · VULTURE

Any Tomdaya stans should watch Spider-Man: Brand New Day with caution. In the first trailer, Peter Parker is a nobody. Dr. Strange erased Peter from the world’s memory to protect the multiverse at the end of the previous film, No Way Home, and even MJ (Zendaya) and Ned (Jacob Batalon) don’t remember him. “Sometimes Spider-Man has to do the hard thing,” Holland’s Peter says, “even if it breaks Peter Parker’s heart.” He crashes a party thrown by Ned and watches MJ look lovingly into another guy’s eyes. “I’m just a neighbor from across the hall,” he tells her. That’s a toughie, Peter.

Luckily, Spider-Man has some other friends on his side. The trailer sees him reconnecting with Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), who’s working as a professor and who gives him a crash course in the DNA change he’s going through that appears to be rendering his powers flaccid. “If DNA is mutating, that would be enormously dangerous,” Banner says. Ominous! Also featured is Jon Bernthal, returning to his role as Punisher from the beloved TV series and getting censored by Peter’s webs along the way. Finally, there’s Severance superstar Tramell Tillman, who is playing a TBD character (who’s wearing a very fancy suit). Learn who it is when Brand New Day comes to theaters on July 31.
