Did Avatar: Fire and Ash Flame Out at the Box Office?
by Bethy Squires · VULTUREIt says a lot about the career of Big Jim Cameron that making “only” $88 million domestically on your opening weekend is a slight disappointment. Avatar: Fire and Ash soared to the top of the box office, as if atop the Mighty Ikran. The third Avatar film made $88 million in the U.S. and $345 million globally. It’s the second-biggest opening of 2025, after Zootopia 2 this past Thanksgiving. The first Avatar made $77 mil in its first week, but went on to become the highest-grossing film of all time. So let’s look at the long game here, folks.
Marty Supreme also had a big weekend at the box office. You may be thinking, Doesn’t Marty Supreme come out Christmas Day? I distinctly recall Timothée Chalamet saying that many, many times. Well, it releases wide Christmas Day. But the film had an extremely limited release of six theaters this weekend and made $875,000 at them. That’s $145,933 a screen. Variety says it’s the highest per-screen average of 2025, as well as A24’s best ever. But the real test will come when Marty Supreme releases wide Christmas Day. “Marty Supreme Christmas Day, Marty Supreme Christmas Day.” – Timmy Chalamet.
