Nirvanna the Band the Show the Hulu

Ladies and gentlemen and everything in between, what you are about to see is something you’ve never seen before — at least not on streaming or home video in the United States. Neon must have some incredible copyright lawyers, because the distributor is bringing Nirvanna the Band the Show to Hulu beginning on July 24 (and to Disney+ in Canada on August 7). The two eight-episode seasons of the Canadian comedy series ran on Viceland between 2017 and 2018 and since then, they have been available to watch only by sneaking around various pirated Google Drive and Internet Archive links. The show follows Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol as they fruitlessly try to get their band booked at Toronto’s Rivoli Theatre. Like children’s cereal mascots, their efforts are cartoonish and doomed to fail.

Bringing the show to a Disney-owned streaming platform seems logistically arduous as each episode pushes fair-use laws to their limit, weaving famous film and video-game scores and clips into the plot. In one episode, they straight-up bring cameras into a sold-out Cineplex and film part of Star Wars: The Force Awakens (the same episode also spoofs Daredevil). If Toronto is the third character in the show, their lawyer is the fourth.

On July 24, Neon will also release Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie on Hulu. Between this and the wildfires, it’s a Canadian invasion! Binge it if you must, just don’t press your eyeballs up against the screen.
