Matthew Rhys Is the Mayor of the Emmys

There was a time, during the first three seasons of The Americans, when you could be reasonably outraged at the Emmys for ignoring Matthew Rhys. No longer! He just won two (2) separate Emmy Awards in one night: one for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series, for his work in The Beast in Me, and one for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, for Widow’s Bay. That’s so many Emmy Awards. After winning for The Beast in Me, Rhys returned to stage for his second award and thanked Katie Dippold, the creator of Widow’s Bay. (She won her own award later that night for writing.) “Her genius does live in the recesses of her disturbed brain,” he said. He ended his second speech by thanking “the great and good people of Wales … we are a small but mighty nation.”

This marks Rhys’s second and third Emmy wins. He first won for the final season of The Americans in 2018, and he has also been nominated for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series, for Girls, and again for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, for Perry Mason. In addition to being the first actor to take home two prizes in one night, with The Americans’s Drama Series win, The Beast in Me giving him a Limited Series win, and Widow’s Bay scoring a Comedy Series, he becomes the first performer ever to win all three available Emmys in the Leading categories. And no sea hag can take that away from him.
