The World Cup Halftime Show Is Filled With Superstars
by Jason P. Frank · VULTUREThis year, the World Cup is aiming to be somehow bigger than ever. The worldwide event is expanding its reach to get not only the soccer fans but also the music fans. This year, the final game will feature the first ever World Cup halftime show, with a global array of international superstars. Madonna, Shakira, and BTS are headlining the show, which will take place at MetLife Stadium on July 19. The group reflects the global audience of the World Cup, featuring top-tier talents in American pop, Latin pop, and K-pop who have all crossed over into worldwide success. The band Coldplay announced the set on their social media, saying that the set was “curated by Coldplay’s Chris Martin.”
Of the three artists, Shakira has the longest history with FIFA. Her song “Waka Waka” is an iconic World Cup anthem, and she also put out this year’s official World Cup song, “Dai Dai,” featuring Nigerian Afrobeats singer Burna Boy. While BTS has not performed all together at the World Cup before, Jung Kook, one of the group’s members, did perform his song “Dreamers” at the 2022 Opening Ceremony. This will be Madonna’s first time working with the World Cup, but she’s the perfect representative of the host country’s pop music. The 2027 Super Bowl halftime show will have a lot to live up to.
