Robert Pattinson Praises ‘Selfless’ Steven Soderbergh on Batman Sequel

Production on The Batman: Part II starts soon: same bat, same man, but a new director behind the camera. When Matt Reeves stepped away from The Batman: Part II on October 5, he left the DC sequel in good hands, passing it to his longtime friend Steven Soderbergh, who would be taking on his first superhero movie and first collaboration with star Robert Pattinson. Incapacitated by a “family matter,” Reeves announced on his Twitter that he was “not leaving” the film but that Soderbergh would be stepping in to come to his “aid during this challenging time” and help “finish principal photography.” When Soderbergh’s new role was announced, the director put out a statement of his own, writing, “I thought Matt Reeves’ work on The Batman was stunning; it was intentional, specific and rigorously coherent.” His goal, he added, was to integrate his own work seamlessly with Reeves’s vision.

While promoting Primetime, Pattinson weighed in on the new director stepping into the fray. “It’s incredibly generous of him,” he said of Soderbergh in a conversation with Games Radar, “and he’s doing it in the loveliest way. It’s completely selfless.” One had hoped Soderbergh and Pattinson would come together under better circumstances, but the pairing of two of the most prolific artists in Hollywood is still something of a thrill. “For someone to come in and say, ‘I just want to help Matt do it; I want to do it in conjunction with him and just get it to the edit.’ And to have someone who’s as talented as Steven doing it is great,” Pattinson added. Here’s hoping the pair work well enough with each other that it inspires them to do something together in the future on their own terms, like a talky, sexy adult spy thriller or heist movie. Just think of all the crazy voices these two could cook up.
