Roy Keane brings future son-in-law Taylor Harwood-Bellis back down to earth after England goal
by Dan Marsh · Irish MirrorRoy Keane grudgingly praised his future son-in-law, Taylor Harwood-Bellis, for scoring in England's second half demolition of the Republic of Ireland.
The Southampton defender, 22, earned his maiden senior call-up for this week's international double-header and marked his debut with a dream goal in Sunday night's thumping 5-0 win over Ireland.
He headed in to complete a rotten night for the Irish, who went in at the break level. Liam Scales was sent off shortly after the break after clipping Jude Bellingham in the penalty area with Harry Kane plundering the resulting penalty. Anthony Gordon, Conor Gallagher and Jarrod Bowen all got in on the act before Harwood-Bellis completed the rout.
Harwood-Bellis is engaged to Keane's daughter and the Irishman was on punditry duty for the match for ITV Sport - but the defender's goal did, at least, bring a wry smile to his face on a rough night for the Manchester United icon.
Keane said: "It's almost as good as Kane's goal. It's bittersweet for me, this."
When ITV Sport host Mark Pougatch then explained to any viewers who were unaware that Harwood-Bellis was Keane's future son-in-law, the former midfielder quipped: "It's not done and dusted yet. Listen, things can change really quickly in the Keane household!"
Keane then shared some nice words on the youngster, adding: "It's good for him to make his debut and he's a bit of a goal threat. He's a nice kid and his family have done a really great job."
