Ireland weather: 'Worrying' update over 'severe' storm heading to Ireland as forecast 'not looking good'
by Conor Heneghan · Irish MirrorIreland is set to experience “severe” gusts of wind from a storm likely to hit the country later this week, one of Ireland’s foremost weather experts has forecast.
Alan O’Reilly of Carlow Weather delivered his latest update on Tuesday morning about the anticipated storm heading our way closer to this weekend and said that it is “not looking good at present”.
“The latest weather model updates for storm on Thursday night into Friday are worrying as they bring the centre of the storm further South with severe gusts into Ireland,” O’Reilly wrote on X.
“This can still change but not looking good at present. Keep up to date with forecasts.”
O’Reilly expects the storm to be named at some point on Tuesday, with Met Éireann already having served notice of the inclement weather on the way with a weather advisory that came into effect just after 7am on Tuesday morning and will remain in place until 12am on Saturday.
“On Thursday night and during Friday, a deepening Low-Pressure system is forecast to track close to Ireland,” the advisory reads.
“Very strong winds are likely across the country with the potential for damaging wind gusts and disruption in places. High seas and spells of heavy rain are expected also. Met Éireann is continuously monitoring the evolving situation and weather warnings will be issued as confidence in the forecast track/intensity of the Low-Pressure system improves.”
The wild weather expected in Ireland later this week and weekend comes as a result of a jet stream that has caused temperatures to plummet to well below freezing in the United States in recent days, forcing the inauguration of President Donald Trump indoors and leading to extreme weather warnings in parts of the country.
Before the storm arrives, Met Éireann is predicting plenty of dry weather on Tuesday and Wednesday, with plenty of spells and only scattered showers before it becomes "very unsettled" from Thursday night.
A Status Yellow fog warning is in place for all counties in the Republic of Ireland until 11am on Tuesday morning, with dense fog expected to be once again slow to clear on Wednesday morning ahead of a largely dry day with scattered showers.
