Bohemians and Drogheda United managers react to last night's victory for the Drogs at Dalymount Park

Drogheda United defeated Bohs 1-0 in the League of Ireland Premier Division clash at Dalymount Park.

Drogheda boss Kevin Doherty insists his side deserved to take Bohs’ scalp last night after surviving a second half siege at Dalymount Park.

The Louth side’s 1-0 victory narrows the gap between them and eighth place Bohs to five points as the fight for survival reaches the business end of the season. Both teams play on Monday and Doherty knows a Drogheda victory in Galway, coupled with a Shamrock Rovers win in Tallaght, will give his team a great chance of automatic survival.

But he said: “We have been in good form for quite a while. We have players who will do anything for you on the pitch, which they have done since I have come to the club. They put their bodies on the line. I don’t like to keep going on about it, but some of my players were at work yesterday morning, and to be able to come here and do what they did was unbelievable.

“Bohs have been in excellent form recently. I don’t think they played poorly. In fact they were really good, so I'm sure they will bounce back. They have unbelievable players, they'll be fine but we have to look after ourselves.”

They did so last night, a first half goal from Frantz Pierrot securing the three points and their first away league win of the season.

Doherty said: “Look, we won away (in the FAI Cup) last week. We have had good performances in Galway, when it was 0-0 and we had a stonewall penalty turned down.

“Of course I want to win every game but we have an unbelievable home record. The three points here are the same three points when we play at home. I don’t care how or where we get points. We have put in some brilliant performances away from home.”

Bohs boss, Alan Reynolds, was once again left frustrated that a decent performance was not matched by the result, as his team dominated the second half, yet failed to score. The loss of last year’s leading scorer, Jonathan Afolabi, has hurt them throughout 2024.

Reynolds said: “Look, the first 25 minutes we were not good and they have two front men that are a handful. We needed to deal better with the ball that went in (for the Drogheda goal) but we settled down and in the second half we created a lot of chances but were not clinical; we have got to score some of those chances.

“It is plain to see that we need someone to score goals but its not through lack of effort or working, maybe just a break of a ball but every team is looking for someone to score 15/20 goals a season.”
