by · Irish Mirror

A Rangers fan has died in Istanbul ahead of the Glasgow club's Europa League clash with Fenerbahce.

The supporter died in a road traffic accident overnight in the Turkish capital.

Rangers have issued a statement confirming the sad news ahead of the round-of-16 first leg, reports The Mirror.

It read: "We are devastated to have learned of the passing of one of our supporters in a road traffic accident overnight in Istanbul.

"The immediate thoughts of everyone at the club are with their family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.

"We are remaining in constant contact with both the Turkish and British authorities over this tragic incident."

Tributes flooded in on social media.

"We share your pain. Rest in peace," one Fenerbahce fan said. "Terrible news - RIP," a Rangers supporter added.

Rangers were drawn against Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce after automatically qualifying for the last 16 by finishing in the top eight of the league phase. The Istanbul giants needed a play-off to reach this stage, beating Anderlecht over two legs.

Barry Ferguson was recently appointed Rangers manager following the sacking of Philippe Clement. They're currently 16 points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership table.
