Katie Taylor shows her class with immediate reaction to third win over Amanda Serrano

by · Irish Mirror

Katie Taylor produced a stunning performance to record her third victory over Amanda Serrano - and her immediate thought was to hand out messages of thanks.

The undisputed super-lightweight champion's religion is hugely important to her and she began her post-fight interview with Ariel Helwani by thanking God and Jesus.

She then thanked Serrano after they headlined an all women's card at Madison Square Garden, with 17 world titles on the line throughout the course of the evening.

And then the 39-year-old had a message for the Irish fans, who roared her on to victory at a sold-out MSG in New York.

“First of all, I want to thank God and Jesus for an amazing victory," she said.

“I want to thank Amanda Serrano as well, what an amazing fighter. We have made history three times. It is such a historic fight and a pleasure to share the ring with her. We are history makers forever.

“I thought I did enough. I boxed smart and well and she wasn’t catching much tonight but it is always a close contest. I have a huge amount of respect for Amanda. What a warrior.

“I can't tell you how much it means to me for people to spend their hard-earned money to come over and support me. I love you all and I love my country. Every time I step in here I represent my country and every single one of you guys. Thank you so much.”

Taylor will have to decide very soon if she is going to continue fighting or if she will hang up her gloves.

But she wouldn't be drawn on what her future holds immediately after the fight.

“I don’t know, I just don’t want to fight Amanda Serrano again. She punches too hard,” Taylor stated.

“I have a huge ton of respect for Amanda, she’s such a warrior. It’s a pleasure to share a ring with her.

“We have made history three times. We are history makers forever.

“I thought I was boxing very smart, she wasn’t able to catch me very much tonight. But it’s always close against Amanda.”

Serrano was visibly emotional as she fought back tears in the ring afterwards as she paid tribute to Taylor.

“We tried something different,” she said. “It was all about working smarter, not harder. I tried to keep my distance because apparently it didn’t worth the first two fights. So we tried to stick with the long punches and it just wasn’t enough.

“I don't know, I have to go back and watch it. My team told me they think I won, I’m going to believe what they tell me.

“I was really trying to apply what they were telling me. I really want to support every single one of you for coming out and supporting me and women’s boxing.

“What an amazing night for all of us women. I’m crying at the support, thanks to all of you.

“Thank you Jake Paul, you’ve changed my life. Thank you Netflix for showcasing us warriors.

“Thank you Katie Taylor for an incredible 30 rounds, it’s been a true honour.”
