Google introduces new Universal Cart

It works across merchants and services. You will be able to add things to your cart when you're browsing, searching, chatting with Gemini, watching YouTube, or even reading your Gmail. The moment you add a product, your cart goes to work for you in the background.

It also finds deals, looks at price drops, gives you insights on the price history, and alerts you when something comes back in stock. It all runs on our Gemini models, so your cart gets even smarter as the models improve.

Universal Cart can also find hidden savings for you because it's built on Google's wallet. Google is rolling out the Universal Cart in the US across Search and the Gemini app this summer, with YouTube and Gmail to follow.

Shopping features on Google Search

- Shopping graph: It is the world's most comprehensive catalog of products. It now has over 60 billion listings, and they're constantly updated. Combined with advanced Gemini models, and you get entirely new ways to shop, says Google.

-Universal Commerce Protocol: It's an open source standard that allows all the key players to work across the entire shopping journey. That means it makes everything from product research to checkout to shipment tracking totally seamless. UCP partners include Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Salesforce, and Stripe.

This year, Google is bringing UCP to even more verticals like hotels and local food delivery providers, and to YouTube and Google products. It is also being expanded to Canada, Australia, and the UK in the coming months.

-Agent payments protocol (AP2): It's designed so your AI agent can securely make payments on your behalf, but always under your control. Users can set strict guardrails, and tell the agent the specific branch of products that they want and how much they want to spend. It automatically makes the purchase if the criteria are met.

It uses privacy-preserving technology to keep user data safe, and with tamper-proof digital mandates it ensures the agent is always active on your behalf and gives you a permanent digital paper trail. If you ever need to make a return, you and the merchant are looking at the same record, says Google. AP2 is coming to Gemini Spark soon.

Google introduces Gemini 3.5 Flash

3.5 Flash combines front-end intelligence and action. When compared to 3.1 Pro, Flash is better across the board, almost all benchmarks, says Google.

"3.5 Flash is a very capable model at the frontier and comparable to the best models, but much much faster, which is why when you look at the intelligence vs output speed, it's in a whole league of its own in the top right quarter. When looking at output tokens per second, it's 4x faster than other frontier models and it's incredibly light to use," says Pichai.

Internally, Google says 3.5 Flash has been a game-changer. "We've been using 3.5 Flash with the re-imagined version of our agent-first development platform, anti-gravity, and it's dramatically accelerated how we work.

Gemini 3.5 Flash will first roll out within Google's Antigravity tool.

New content credentials verification

"Invisible to the naked eye since launch, Synth ID has now been enabled on over 100 billion images and videos, along with 60,000 years of audio assets. Millions of people are using our Synth ID detector in the Gemini app to verify AI-generated content. We are now going a step further and adding content credentials verification across products."

"This will show you if the origin of the content was AI or a camera, and if it's being edited with generated tools. In this example, Gemini can tell this photo was captured with the Pixel camera and then edited with Google Photos. We are expanding both Synth ID and content credentials verification to Search and Chrome."

Demis Hassabis was an early Anthropic investor: Report

A day prior to Google I/O 2026, it turns out that the man leading the tech giant's AI efforts had reportedly invested in rival AI company Anthropic. Google DeepMind chief Demis Hassabis made an angel investment in Anthropic before the company emerged as one of the world’s fastest-growing AI startups, according to a report by Financial Times.

The Nobel laureate's position in the Claude-maker was previously undisclosed and highlights his “growing influence across the AI industry," as per the publication.

In an unrelated (but just as surprising) update, famed AI researcher and one of the cofounders of OpenAI, Andrej Karpathy, has announced that he has joined Anthropic.

What is Gemini Intelligence?

At The Android Show a few weeks ago, Google introduced Gemini Intelligence, an AI agent-based operating layer designed to read a user’s screen, move across apps, and autonomously complete tasks that would otherwise require users to jump between multiple platforms.

It is being rolled out first in Galaxy S26 and Pixel 10 devices.

With Gemini Intelligence, Google is moving beyond traditional chatbot-style assistants toward autonomous AI agents. While AI agents are not new, their adoption is still in the nascent stages. Gemini Intelligence could potentially mark a turning point for the mainstream adoption of AI agents, especially in India where over 97 per cent of all smartphones are powered by Android. Recapping The Android Show: I/O Edition

A few weeks ahead of Google I/O 2026, the tech giant unveiled brand new AI features coming to the upcoming Android 17 operating system, including Gemini Intelligence, which essentially lets AI agents take control of your Android device and perform tasks autonomously.

Other new Android features include more robust voice-to-text recognition, some autofill smarts, and enhanced digital well-being settings. The company also announced its new Googlebook platform for AI-first laptops made in partnership with companies like Acer, HP, Lenovo, and Dell.

It’s supposed to be very different from a Chromebook, though Google is yet to share specifics. Maybe we’ll hear more about Gemini Intelligence, Googlebook, and more in today’s keynote. To catch all the announcements from The Android Show 2026: I/O Edition, click here.

Google I/O 2026: What to expect

-Some reports suggest that Google will take the wraps of its latest Gemini model at today’s event. Though, the performance and capabilities of the tech giant’s upcoming LLM is anyone’s guess.

-Given the surge in popularity of smart glasses, Google’s Android XR-powered frames could potentially capture the spotlight at this year’s I/O. Last year’s event saw Google showing off a prototype and that alone had generated considerable excitement.

-We can also expect updates to Google’s portfolio of generative AI products, including Veo, Lyria, and Beam. While Veo and Lyria are Google’s video and music generators, Beam is an ambitious and futuristic way of video conferencing that uses several cameras to make you appear as though you’re speaking directly to the person in front of you as a 3D model.

-We can also expect AI-powered updates to Google Search, which was in focus at last year's I/O. Based on the rumour-mill, there may also be updates to its creative Google Labs suite, such as its AI music creation tool Flow. Google may introduce a new Gemini model for video generation, expected to be called Omni.

-Given that it's I/O, you can also count on a surprise announcement or two, and perhaps even an AI demo that doesn't go exactly as planned.
