BJP's Rejinagar breakthrough, Nandigram landslide win puts CM Suvendu's Muslim outreach in focus

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari's appeal for a "hand of friendship" appears to have resonated among Muslims in the bypolls, as the BJP crushed the AJUP in minority-dominated Rejinagar and secured a record-margin win in Nandigram, which has a sizeable electorate from the community.

Muslims account for around 65 per cent of voters in Murshidabad district's Rejinagar seat and comprise approximately 26 per cent of the electorate in Purba Medinipur's Nandigram. The bypoll results have brought renewed attention to Adhikari's efforts to reach out to the community.

BJP candidate Hasirani Rath won by a margin of 1,22,753 votes over her nearest rival Milan Pradhan of the Congress in Nandigram, where the bypoll was necessitated after Adhikari relinquished the seat he had won by 9,665 votes in the Assembly polls. The chief minister has opted to retain the Bhabanipur seat.

In Rejinagar, BJP's Shankharavh Sarkar amassed 75,816 votes more than Golam Nabi Azad, the son of AJUP chief Humayun Kabir. Barely five months ago, Kabir had won the seat by nearly 59,000 votes over his nearest BJP rival, alongside winning Nowda.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Adhikari said the Rejinagar bypoll outcome demonstrated that minority voters were reposing their trust in the BJP government and were not being swayed by "misleading political narratives". PTI

Democracy has won over mobocracy: Smriti Irani on assembly bypoll results

The BJP on Friday said it is close to a "historic" assembly election victory in Nandigram, which it described as a place once associated with Left-wing ideology, violence and "anti-development" activities.

The party also said it was close to winning in Rejinagar, where 71 per cent of voters belong to the minority community, and that encouraging trends were emerging from Assam's Nagaon.

The BJP also welcomed the NDA's victory in Puducherry. Addressing a press conference, BJP national general secretary Smriti Irani thanked voters in states where assembly bypolls were held, saying the results proved that "democracy has won over mobocracy".

"Democracy has delivered yet another resounding message to the mob," she said, referring to the bypoll results.

Irani also targeted the Congress, alleging that it has taken no action against its own lawmaker facing sexual harassment charges.

"Congress talks of smashing patriarchy, but is not taking any action against its own MP facing sexual harassment charges," she said, referring to now-dismissed JNU professor and Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam. PTI

Bengali-speaking Muslims voting for BJP in large numbers: Suvendu Adhikari

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Friday claimed that Bengali-speaking Muslims were increasingly voting for the BJP, citing the party’s performance in Rejinagar and Nandigram.

“Bengali speaking Muslims are going towards BJP. In Rejinagar we have got around 60% of the Muslim votes and in Nandigram we have got around 80% of Muslim votes. In Nandigram Hansirani Rath broke my record margin (82000 in 2016 assembly polls). Now we have 209 MLAs,” Adhikari said at a press conference at Nabanna, the state secretariat.

He said the CPI(M) and Mamata Banerjee had earlier convinced Muslims that they would be driven away if the BJP came to power, and that the 30% Muslim population would thwart the BJP. However, he claimed that after the BJP came to power, Muslims, especially Bengali-speaking Muslims, understood that the party was committed to development.

“Their experience was different. Out of 70,000 beneficiaries of Annapurna Yojana in Rejinagar, 35,000 are Muslim mothers are sisters. Those who were deleted by adjudication faced that not because of BJP or EC, but Mamata Banerjee. She went to the Supreme Court. Without a majority of Muslims voting for us, we would not have got such a big victory in Rejinagar,” he said.

Adhikari also announced plans to visit Rejinagar to lay the foundation stone for a bridge in the Narkelbari area. “We will set up a hospital and college,” he added.
