MK Stalin on TVK win in bypoll

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin reacted to the TVK’s victory in the Madurantakam and Dharapuram by-elections, alleging that the party used its governmental authority, financial resources and police force to secure the wins.

Stalin said the ruling party had fielded two defectors as candidates and contested the bypolls with the backing of “authority, governmental power, financial clout and police force”. He also took a dig at TVK chief Vijay, saying the actor-turned-politician had relied on his “cinematic charisma” and believed that his popularity would be enough to win the elections.

Referring to Vijay’s campaign activities, Stalin said he had sipped tea, driven a tractor, plucked drumsticks and gone door-to-door during his four-day campaign across the two constituencies. Stalin alleged that large crowds were brought in from outside, roads were barricaded along Vijay’s campaign routes and money was spent extensively during the campaign. He also referred to affidavits filed by ruling party candidates regarding expenditure.

Taking a jibe at Vijay’s earlier criticism of his campaign style, Stalin said the TVK leader had been forced to campaign in the “scorching heat” for four days and would now have to understand the work involved in party organisation, elections and public service. Stalin also alleged that the TVK announced schemes such as expanded free bus travel for women, Thaimaaman Thangamothiram and Anna Seer only after the election schedule was announced, claiming that this amounted to violations of election rules.

“As far as I’m concerned, betrayal has secured an interim victory. At the same time, the downfall of fake image politics has begun!” Stalin said.

Counting began at 8 am for the Madurantakam and Dharapuram Assembly constituencies. The results will be closely watched by both the ruling party and the Opposition.

In Puducherry: The All India NR Congress (AINRC) registered a comfortable victory in Thattanchavady, with its candidate Ashok Anand polling 13,358 votes. The Indian National Congress candidate finished a distant second with 4,876 votes, trailing by a margin of 8,482 votes.

Vijay celebrates TVK’s Madurantakam, Dharapuram bypoll victories

TVK chief Vijay celebrated his party’s victory in the Madurantakam and Dharapuram by-elections in a social media post, saying the results reflected the people’s support for the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and their desire for democracy.

Vijay said the victories were achieved without spending money to influence voters, confining people to lists or using alleged “Thirumangalam” or “Erode East” formulas, claiming that the party relied instead on “love, affection and relationships” and the “safeguarding of democracy”. He said Tamil Nadu was “not a fortress of corrupt forces” but a “fortress of the great people’s power”, adding that the bypoll results had demonstrated the strength of people’s support for TVK. Vijay also claimed that the results had rejected allegations of cash-for-votes and said those who had mocked TVK’s two-day campaign in the two constituencies had received their answer from the voters. He further questioned what the outcome of the previous Tamil Nadu Assembly elections could have been had TVK been allowed to campaign across the state.
