SCTIMST unveils indigenously developed 'Chitra Core' coronary stent

The Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST) and a private company Invasive Technologies in Kerala have unveiled ‘Chitra Core’, an indigenously developed drug-eluting coronary stent aimed at making cardiac care more affordable. The Cobalt-Chromium stent is coated with Everolimus and uses 30-40% less metal than conventional stents, potentially reducing blood vessel damage and risks of restenosis and late-stage thrombosis. Developed by SCTIMST, the technology was transferred to Invasive Technologies in 2024, which received a CDSCO manufacturing licence in December 2025.

PM Modi, Xi Jinping among leaders at SCO Summit in Bishkek

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping exchanged a handshake as they arrived for the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek. The summit, held at the Yrys Ordo Congress Hall, is being attended by SCO members and invited leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin. PM Modi’s ‘Jhooth Ki Goonj’ jab at Opposition after 7.8% GDP growth

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in an instagram video statement congratulated the people of India after the country recorded 7.8% GDP growth in the first quarter of FY27, saying the figure reflected their collective strength and efforts. Taking a swipe at the Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, Modi said, “On the other hand, within India too, there are people drowned in an abyss of despair who are trying to spread despair all around through the ‘echo of lies’(Jhoot ki Goonj).” Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, wars and conflicts around the world, India had continued to progress, he said. Modi added that the country’s policies were sound and its intentions clear, and that the strength of 140 crore people was helping India reach new heights.

Anna Hazare hospitalised in Mumbai

Social activist Anna Hazare has been admitted to a Mumbai hospital for treatment of a viral infection and acute dehydration, his aide said on Tuesday. Hazare was shifted to Bombay Hospital in South Mumbai on Monday from Ahilyanagar district, where he had initially been admitted to a local hospital for treatment, the aide said, as per PTI.

CBI books FCI, NERAMAC officials over diversion of subsidised rice

The CBI has registered an FIR against officials of the Food Corporation of India (FCI) and the North Eastern Regional Agricultural Marketing Corporation (NERAMAC) over irregularities in the distribution of subsidised rice for poor labourers. According to the agency, the rice was diverted to traders, who sold it for profit instead of giving it to the people it was meant for.

Mumbai CNG, PNG price hike

Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Domestic Piped Natural Gas (DPNG) will get costlier in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MR) from today, September 1, after Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) announced a price hike. Citing rising input costs, MGL has hiked the CNG prices by Rs 2 per kg and domestic DPNG by Re 1 per standard cubic metre (SCM), effective today.
The revised rates stand at Rs 88 per kg for CNG and Rs 53 per SCM for DPNG.
According to MGL, the price increase was necessitated by the ongoing West Asia crisis, which has directly escalated input gas prices linked to international indices.

Woman stabs 2 people in New York’s Times Square; shot dead by NYPD

A Queens woman stabbed two people in New York City’s Times Square on Monday before she was shot dead by police, officials said. The woman allegedly pulled two knives from a shopping bag and attacked a 68-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman near West 42nd Street and Seventh Avenue. The woman later died of her injuries, while the man is in stable condition. Police said officers confronted the suspect near an NYPD substation and spent several minutes trying to persuade her to drop the knives. After a Taser failed to stop her and she moved towards officers while wielding the weapons, two officers opened fire.

Kerala medical institute SCTIMST launches new indigenously developed heart stent

The Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST) and Invasive Technologies have unveiled 'Chitra Core', an indigenously developed drug-eluting coronary stent aimed at providing affordable cardiac care.

The stent uses a Cobalt-Chromium alloy platform coated with the drug Everolimus and contains 30-40 per cent less metal than conventional coronary stents, according to SCTIMST. Developers said the reduced metal content could help minimise blood vessel damage and lower the risks of restenosis and late-stage thrombosis.

The technology was developed by SCTIMST's Division of Artificial Internal Organs and transferred to Invasive Technologies in 2024. The company received a manufacturing licence from CDSCO in December 2025.

SCTIMST is also developing 'Chitra TiN', a polymer-free coronary stent with a Titanium Nitride coating. It is entering pre-clinical evaluation and is planned for a global launch.

Vice-President Radhakrishnan visits Norwegian Embassy, condoles death of King Harald V

Vice-President C P Radhakrishnan on Tuesday visited the Royal Norwegian Embassy in New Delhi and expressed condolences on the death of King Harald V of Norway.

Radhakrishnan signed the condolence book and conveyed his sympathies to the royal family and people of Norway on behalf of the Government and people of India. He recalled the late king's service to Norway and his contribution to strengthening India-Norway relations and developing them into a modern economic partnership.

Norwegian Ambassador to India May-Elin Stener and other embassy officials were present during the visit.

Assam transfers Rs 25 crore relief to flood-hit families, announces youth schemes fund

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said the state government has transferred Rs 25.12 crore as interim relief to 16,746 flood-hit families in Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat districts.

Each affected family received Rs 15,000, while the government is providing one-time assistance to a total of 1,17,095 households, involving Rs 175 crore.

Sarma said Rs 300 crore has so far been released for repair and restoration work, with the government expecting to spend more than Rs 1,000 crore after completing its damage assessment. Repairs have been taken up for 405 roads and 244 water supply projects, besides schools, anganwadis and namghars.

The CM also released funds under the CM-FLIGHT scheme for Japanese language training and announced financial assistance for fresh graduates under the Jibon Prerna Scheme. Under Jibon Prerna, Rs 118.6 crore will be disbursed to 48,188 candidates, with each receiving Rs 2,500 per month for a year.

Ram temple CEO: Selection panel likely to submit three names to Trust

The selection committee is likely to submit three shortlisted names to the Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust for the appointment of the first CEO of the Ram temple in Ayodhya, sources said on Tuesday.

The Trust is expected to decide on the CEO at a meeting on Wednesday at the residence of its president, Nritya Gopal Das, in Maniramdas Chhawani. The three-member selection panel — retired Justice Pramod Kohli, retired Lieutenant General Vishnukant Chaturvedi and Suresh Hawde — has reached Ayodhya.

The panel examined around 5,500 applications before conducting in-person interviews with 16 candidates, according to Trust treasurer Govind Dev Giri. The CEO will oversee the temple's day-to-day functioning.

The Trust is also likely to announce names for three vacant posts, including two members and the general secretary, at Wednesday's meeting. Jagdish Ofale is set to become the first secretary of the temple trust, while VHP international general secretary Bajrang Lal Bangda may also be inducted into the Trust.

Mumbai buffalo milk price increases

Fresh buffalo milk prices in Mumbai rose by Rs 9 per litre, reaching Rs 102 per litre. The Mumbai Milk Producers' Welfare Association (MMPA) told PTI that the revised rate will remain in place until February 28, 2027, to offset a 60 to 70 per cent increase in the acquisition cost of milch animals and a 25 per cent rise in feed prices.

"The wholesale price hike by Rs 9 per litre from September 1 means retail rates may also shoot up to Rs 115-125 per litre or more, depending on the localities served, and the local demand," MMPA chairman C K Singh said.

Weapons, ammunition stolen from army facility in Secunderabad

Five assault rifles, seven pistols, 21 magazines and ammunition were stolen from an Army storage facility in Secunderabad Cantonment, police said on Tuesday. The theft came to light around 7:50 am on August 31 when personnel found the locks of the ‘Kote and Battalion Magazine’ broken. The weapons and ammunition had last been physically accounted for at 6 pm on August 30. An FIR was registered on a complaint by a Lieutenant Colonel of the Madras Regiment at Bollarum, while the Army has launched an internal inquiry and is assisting the investigating agency. (PTI)

Delhi police steps up security ahead of CJP protest march on September 5

Security has been intensified across Delhi and parts of central Delhi ahead of a proposed September 5 protest march by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) from India Gate to the Police Headquarters near Jantar Mantar, police sources said. Additional personnel have been deployed and barricades put up around Jantar Mantar as a precautionary measure. NEET protest cases: 4 states seek Supreme Court nod to cancel FIRs against students

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the Supreme Court that four state governments have also filed applications seeking the cancellation of cases against students who participated in the July protests over the NEET-UG question paper leak. The matter was mentioned before a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, which is hearing the Delhi Police's plea to cancel FIRs registered against protesters in the national capital. Mehta said the applications were filed on Tuesday morning and requested the court to take them up at 2 pm, a request accepted by the bench comprising Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana. The Delhi Police had approached the court on Monday, citing "public and national interest", and invoked Article 142 to seek quashing of the FIRs after the Centre decided on July 25 to withdraw the cases.

62-year-old man held for molesting minor girl in Thane

A 62-year-old man was arrested in Maharashtra’s Thane district for allegedly molesting a 14-year-old girl and making obscene remarks, police said. The accused, a powerloom worker and the girl’s neighbour, grabbed her hand with sexual intent while she was feeding an animal near their chawl in Taware Wadi on Sunday night. A case was registered at Bhiwandi police station under Section 74 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and relevant provisions of the POCSO Act following a complaint by the girl’s mother. (PTI)

6 pilgrims killed as pick-up vehicle rams truck in Haryana’s Palwal

Six pilgrims were killed and 14 others injured after a pick-up vehicle carrying them rammed into a stationary truck on the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal Expressway in Haryana’s Palwal early Tuesday, police said. The accident took place around 4.30 am as the pilgrims, who had visited the Khatu Shyam temple and other shrines in Rajasthan, were travelling to Vrindavan in Uttar Pradesh. Police suspect the driver fell asleep at the wheel. He fled the spot after the crash and efforts are underway to trace him. The victims, all from Uttar Pradesh’s Mainpuri district, included three women. (PTI)

Delhi traffic diversions today amid BRICS Summit rehearsal

Several roads in Delhi will face traffic restrictions and diversions between 11 am and 3 pm on Tuesday due to a motorcade rehearsal ahead of the BRICS Summit 2026, the Delhi Traffic Police said. The rehearsal will affect more than 35 roads at 22 diversion points, including Sardar Patel Marg, Mother Teresa Crescent, Teen Murti Marg, Mathura Road, Janpath, Ashoka Road, Barakhamba Road, Tolstoy Marg, Shanti Path and Africa Avenue Road. 'ED, CBI troubled me for 4 years' says K Kavitha over Delhi excise case

TRS chief K Kavitha became emotional while speaking about the Delhi excise policy case in which she was jailed in Tihar in 2024, claiming that she was harassed by the Enforcement Directorate and CBI despite committing no wrongdoing.

Addressing a public meeting in Nizamabad, Kavitha said, "But, I made a resolve. Why was I put in Tihar jail in Delhi? It is not our language, not our people there. What mistake have I committed? I am the daughter-in-law of this district. I was put in Tihar jail. But I did not lose courage. ED and CBI troubled me for four years. But on every occasion, I said I did not make any mistake and that I am like fire," she said.

She also called for a “Bahujana Telangana” focused on free education and healthcare, farmers’ welfare, jobs and social justice, while alleging that Nizamabad did not receive water from the Kaleshwaram project despite the state spending around Rs 1 lakh crore on it. (PTI)
