Maharashtra, Jharkhand Election 2024 Schedule, Dates LIVE Updates: The Election Commission of India Tuesday announced the Maharashtra assembly polls will take place on November 20, while Jharkhand polls will be held in two phases – November 13 and 20. Both the results will be announced on November 23. While the BJP hopes to make a return to power in Maharashtra, where it has an alliance with the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, the saffron party will look to make a dent in Jharkhand, too.

Why is Maharashtra important for BJP? Following a successful return to power in Haryana, the BJP will be eyeing a similar run in Maharashtra, too, where the Opposition MVA has looked upbeat since winning 30 of the 48 Lok Sabha seats four months ago. Sources have said that the BJP will contest in 105 seats, the Shiv Sena in 40, and the Nationalist Congress Party in 41. This leaves 102 of the 288 total seats still undecided. The term of the 288-seat Maharashtra Assembly will end on November 26, which means the poll process has to be completed before that.

Maharashtra, Jharkhand Election 2024 Dates, Schedule LIVE: Key takeaways from CEC Rajiv Kumar's remarks

Here are the key takeaways from CEC Rajiv Kumar's remarks on exit polls:

Distortion of Reality: Exit polls create significant distortions in public expectations regarding election outcomes.
Need for Press Introspection: There is a call for the media, particularly electronic outlets, to reflect on their practices concerning exit polls, including sample sizes and survey methodologies.
Lack of Governance: The CEC noted that exit polls are not governed by any authority, leading to potential misinformation.
Scientific Basis Required: Kumar highlighted the absence of a scientific foundation for the public disclosures related to exit polls, which raises concerns about their reliability.
Timing Issues: He pointed out the confusion caused by the timing of initial trends and actual counting results, which can mislead the public.
Expectation vs. Reality Gap: The mismatch between exit poll predictions and actual results can lead to voter frustration and calls for a reevaluation of how exit polls are reported.
Call for Self-Regulation: Kumar urged governing bodies to implement self-regulation to address these issues and improve the integrity of exit polls.

Maharashtra, Jharkhand Election 2024 Dates, Schedule LIVE: What CEC Rajiv Kumar said on exit polls

On Exit Polls, CEC Rajiv Kumar says, "A major distortion is being created due to Exit Polls and the expectations set by it. This is a matter of deliberation and introspection for the Press, especially for electronic media. In the last few elections,two-three things are happening, simultaneously. If we look at the entire canvas together. First, an Exit Poll comes - we don't govern it...But there is a need for self-introspection - what was the sample size, where was the survey done, how did the result come and what is my responsibility if I did not match to that result, are there disclosures - all of these need to be seen. There are bodies which govern this...I am sure the time has come that Associations/Bodies which govern, will do some self-regulation...Counting happens roughly on the third day after the elections end. Expectations rise from 6 pm...but there is no scientific base to this in public disclosure. When counting begins, results start pouring at 8.05-8.10 am. This is nonsense. The first counting (of EVMs) begins at 8.30 am...Are the initial trends to justify the Exit Poll?...We start putting the results at 9.30 am on the website...So, when the actual results start coming in, there is a mismatch. That mismatch can lead to serious issues sometimes. The gap between expectations and achievements is nothing but frustration. So, this issue is such that needs some deliberation..."
