Jio Platforms today made a blockbuster debut at the stock exchanges with a premium of over 21 per cent and went on to become India’s second most valuable firm by market capitalisation. Record response to IPO: Earlier, its Rs 30,213-crore IPO drew Rs 7.3 lakh crore in bids, the biggest-ever investor response to a public issue in the country. Subscribed 22.19 times, it signalled a massive appetite for shares of the Mukesh Ambani-led telecom-to-digital conglomerate. The frenzy was led by institutional investors, with qualified institutional buyers (QIBs) bidding for 70.55 times their allotted quota on the closing day of the IPO, according to stock exchange data.

What analysts expect

Originally started as a telecom business, Jio has since transitioned towards becoming a digital ecosystem with an aim to also offer AI services.

“It is India’s largest digital connectivity platform by subscriber base, carrying a majority of the country’s wireless data traffic, with a nationwide 5G network built on proprietary technology and a growing fixed wireless broadband business under JioAirFiber. Digital services span cloud, enterprise solutions and artificial intelligence,” said analysts from Motilal Oswal.

Analysts cite factors like Jio’s steady growth in average revenue per user (ARPU), earnings, entry into AI services, and a strong cash flow as key strengths for the company. For context, Jio’s ARPU – among the most important metrics in the telecom sector – grew to Rs 214 in FY26 and Rs 215.6 in the April-June quarter (Q1) of FY27, from Rs 181.7 in FY24.

While it lags behind Bharti Airtel’s ARPU of Rs 264 in Q1 of FY27, it has a larger subscriber base and a more diversified business, according to analysts.

“Jio’s higher market cap comes from the potential it offers in terms of AI services. Meta holds a 10% stake, while Google holds an around 8% stake in the company. They have also signed key partnerships with Jio, which can potentially lead to the company offering attractive AI services in the future through these collaborations,” an analyst at a leading domestic brokerage said.

Why Jio IPO has garnered immense attention

The IPO of Jio Platforms has been one of the most closely watched developments in India’s capital markets, largely because of the company’s dominant position in telecommunications and its rapidly expanding digital ecosystem. Since its launch in 2016, Jio transformed the Indian telecom sector through aggressive pricing, widespread 4G and 5G adoption and large-scale investments in network infrastructure.

Jio has over 524 million subscribers across India. Jio’s network leadership in 5G continued to attract subscribers with a total 5G subscriber base reaching 268 million as of March 2026. Customer engagement also remains robust with 5G now accounting for 55% of total wireless traffic, the company said.
