India vs Sri Lanka, 1st Test Day 3: SL 274 all out at stumps, IND lead by 178 runs in Galle

Sonal Dinusha scored a lovely century, and Niroshan Dickwella managed to get a half-century, which helped Sri Lanka avoid the threat of following on on Day 3 of the first Test in Galle. Follow all lupdates.

Manav Suthar picked up four wickets to restrict Sri Lanka to 274 which helped India take a lead of 178 runs in the first innings. Earlier, India were bundled out for 462 runs in the first innings. The visitors managed to secure a dominant position in the first of the two-match Test series in Galle on Sunday with their batting. On the back of a century from Devdutt Padikkal, they finished Day 2 at 460/9, with Kuldeep Yadav and Prasidh Krishna unbeaten, after a day cut short by rain.

KL Rahul, who scored a gritty half-century on Day 1, returned to bat but could not add many runs to his score. Dhruv Jurel was the other important contributor, scoring a breezy half-century when the team needed it. Apart from these two, there were a few starts from the other players but not convert into big scores.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, after disappointing bowling on the first day, came back well. The likes of Prabath Jayasuriya and Nuwantha Keshara altered their bowling plans, which worked out. The second new ball was when the Sri Lankan spinners started to dominate the game.

Well, in that afternoon session, it did look like India were losing grips of this game, but in the final session they roared back. Manav Suthar has been quite superb with the ball yet again, playing his second Test match; he was getting to turn the ball pretty quickly, and he found a veteran deputy in Ravindra Jadeja, who picked up three wickets. Seamers did their job with one wicket apiece and bowled with aggression. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, will be happy with Sonal Dinusha and his performance but would want their openers to have done much better than they did in the end.

Ravindra Jadeja's delivery hit the pad of the batter, which he reviewed, and there was nothing on the ultra-edge, and he was deemed out on the field as there were three reds. While Manav Suthar has been the most impressive of the lot, the spell from Kuldeep Yadav again here has been neither here nor there. In that game against Afghanistan in Chandigarh, too, he could only pick wickets when the batters wanted to go after him. Somewhere over the years, to become a better bowler for all conditions, it does seem like he has lost that art of beating the batters on their defence. It is a spell as of now which has more questions for the Indian think tank than answers. The partnership between Dickwella and Sonal showed India might be missing an off-spinning option in this game.

One thing which is happening is that the seam of this Kookaburra is flattened, and the ball is going much slower to the batters, giving them more time to adjust to the pace of the conditions. The advantage, though, India has is that they have managed to pick up five wickets. It was a close call against Niroshan Dickwella; it was a delivery that came in with the angle, and Dickwella got a good stride forward outside the line of the stumps. Although the ball hit the pads and looked pretty plumb, the umpire did not give it out, and when it went upstairs, it showed umpire's call on impact. The indecision, though, came from the ball before, when Suthar threw one wide outside the off stump, which the batter thought drove for a boundary would have hoped that one to come back, which did not happen. Sri Lanka has shown some intent since the lunch break here.

Obviously, long journey, especially for me, playing here at Galle and be part of the 600th Test is a big feeling and I'm feeling very happy about it. [On India arriving around 10 days early and preparing for the Test series] Look, it was very important, firstly, to get that 10 days of window, and then obviously, practice at Colombo for like six days, and those six days were very good in terms of preparing in all the conditions. But yeah, I mean, we got enough time to prepare for the Test series. [On helping the inexperienced players adapt to Sri Lankan conditions] There are a few guys who are travelling here the first time. But yeah, the conditions are a bit different in terms of the wickets we got in the last few practice sessions. But, they have played enough cricket back home. We had a chat about how the Kookaburra ball behaves. In terms of planning and if you look at the other spinners, we'll get extra bounce here. So those were the chats we had amongst the group. I'm pretty sure they're ready to go. [On the conditions] If you look at the last couple of games which we played at Galle, they were good batting wickets and teams scored very high in the first innings. If you get a spinning track, then probably spin more. It's a good stadium and good wicket to play cricket. And wind plays a factor as well. So I think it'll be a good experience.

Ironically enough, the wicket that got Kamindu Mendis was due to Kuldeep's slower pace rather than the quicker one; he stayed on the back foot and pushed the ball. It was slow, and the credit for the wicket, though, has to go to Shubman Gill, who sprang to his left and completed the catch with his left hand. Sri Lanka has lost four wickets here in no time, and they still trail by over 400 runs. They are in deep trouble; they would want to build a partnership here.
