Pakistan top court orders Imran Khan to be moved to hospital from jail, says his party

Pakistan’s Supreme Court ordered former Prime Minister Imran Khan to be moved from jail to a hospital on Tuesday, according to his PTI party. ‘Very positive’ US-Iran talks ongoing, says Trump’s envoy

The UK’s Maritime Trade Operations agency (UKMTO) said it had received a report of an incident in the Strait of Hormuz, with a vessel struck by an unidentified projectile while making an outbound transit. The strike damaged the ship’s engine room and left one crew member dead, UKMTO said, adding that the rest of the crew were being helped by the Omani Coast Guard. The incident comes as the US-Iran memorandum aimed at de-escalating hostilities lapsed without renewal, with President Trump telling Fox News on Monday that Tehran should raise the “white flag” in the five-month US-Israel conflict.

Despite claiming to have opened a direct backchannel with Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, Trump said he’s in no rush to strike a deal, even as he threatened military action against US ally Oman if it interferes with reopening the blockaded Strait of Hormuz a threat that lands as Iran and Oman work on a joint arrangement to keep the waterway open to commercial shipping.

Amid the rising tensions, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan pressed Trump in a phone call on Tuesday to pursue diplomacy, offering Ankara’s support for peace efforts, according to the Turkish presidency. The call came hours after a senior Iranian official told Reuters that Tehran would shift to a “fully offensive” military posture, with talks on a permanent end to the war having stalled and Washington ruling out extending the ceasefire.

The 5 things to know:

  • Trump demands Iran “surrender,” claims backchannel talks with Revolutionary Guard.
  • US-Iran memorandum of understanding expires without renewal.
  • Trump threatens to bomb Oman over Strait of Hormuz dispute.
  • Iran signals shift to “fully offensive” posture as talks stall.
  • Vessel struck by projectile while transiting Strait of Hormuz.

How a Kyiv McDonald's, bombed nine times, became a symbol of survival in Ukraine's war
A McDonald's outlet in Kyiv's Lukianivka neighbourhood has become known as the most bombed McDonald's in the world, according to NBC News. It has been struck at least nine times during the war in Ukraine since Russia's invasion began four and a half years ago.

The restaurant's walls carry marks from shrapnel left by Russian bombardment, and some of its windows have been swapped for wooden panels or bulletproof glass. Despite the damage, the Kyiv McDonald's keeps reopening once the smoke clears and continues to serve as a gathering point for people in the neighbourhood.

Customers and residents in Lukianivka talk about what the restaurant means to them. One woman, who was there on the day it first opened decades ago and has kept coming back through the destruction, said: "We're unbreakable, and the McDonald's is unbreakable."

Commuters from the nearby metro come in for coffee just before 9 am, while a customer looks out through the bulletproof glass at the burnt remains of a nearby shopping mall. At 9 am, staff and customers pause for a moment of silence to mark the tens of thousands killed in the war, even as the kitchen equipment continues beeping in the background.

Lytvynenko, who grew up in Lukianivka, wrote separately about covering the story. She recalled being in her Kyiv flat in January 2025 when missiles struck nearby with enough force to send her running for shelter, with the strike hitting the neighbourhood she knew from childhood.

She said the attack ruptured a water pipe and left the area flooded, while a nearby Soviet-era weapons factory was left smoking. The metro station and the McDonald's beside it were gutted in the strike, but the restaurant reopened afterwards.

This report on Kyiv's most bombed McDonald's is the first in a series looking at the state of the war in Ukraine, with further coverage planned on the front lines, drone warfare, and how Russia uses prisoners of war for propaganda.

Ukraine's first McDonald's opened in 1997, seen at the time as a symbol of the country's post-Soviet outlook. The same golden arches in Lukianivka stand as a marker of the cost of Russia's war on Ukraine.

US teen lifeguard who saved Indian-origin boy gets Trump’s White House invite

US President Donald Trump on Monday honoured 16-year-old lifeguard Ryder Williams and 10-year-old Indian-origin boy Nathaniel Rai at the White House, weeks after Williams rescued the child from powerful waves at a California beach.

Williams was joined at the Oval Office by his parents, Shane and Shannon, and fellow lifeguard Aaron Bohnen, who assisted in the rescue. Nathaniel attended the meeting with his father Sumit and sister Layla.

Williams rescued Nathaniel on July 25 after spotting the boy lose his footing in ankle-deep water at Seabright Beach in Santa Cruz, California. Footage of the rescue, which showed the teenager battling powerful waves to bring Nathaniel back to shore, later went viral on social media and was seen by Trump.

Trump praised Williams as a “real hero” and congratulated Nathaniel for surviving the ordeal.

“What you did was incredible, and everybody saw it,” Trump told Williams, recalling the video of the rescue. “When I first saw it, I said, ‘roll that back, I want to see that again.’”

Iran's Foreign Minister accuses Israel of sabotaging ceasefire deal with US

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused Israel of actively sabotaging diplomatic efforts and said that it was the primary obstacle to a lasting ceasefire agreement with the United States, according to , IRNA news agency.

“The Zionist regime was and remains the biggest opponent and obstacle to the implementation of the memorandum of understanding. They made every effort to prevent such an agreement from being reached, every effort to make this agreement fail, and every effort to prevent it from being implemented,” he said.

He further said that Trump's demand for Iran's “unconditional surrender” did not materialise, as Tehran accepted a ceasefire and negotiated with Washington on its own terms.

Who “sought an unconditional surrender, within a short time of the war’s commencement, were begging for negotiations,” Araghchi said.

“It was us who said we would not accept a ceasefire and continued the war until we reached a point where they accepted a ceasefire and negotiations on Iran’s terms,” he said.

Donald Trump’s approval rating hits lowest of current presidency in new poll

US President Donald Trump’s approval rating has fallen to its lowest level of his current presidency, with Americans increasingly concerned that the US-Iran war could drag on, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll.

Just 33 per cent of respondents approved of Trump’s performance in the White House, while 64 per cent disapproved, the four-day survey showed. The approval rating was down from 35 per cent in a poll that concluded earlier this month and is the lowest recorded during Trump’s current term.

It matches the lowest point of his first presidency, reached in December 2017.

Hormuz crossings rise slightly from weekend, remain in single digits, data shows

Ship crossings through the Strait of Hormuz stayed in single digits on Monday, only slightly higher than over the weekend, according to preliminary shipping data reported by Reuters on Tuesday, as US-Iran peace talks remained stalled.

Key points:

Hormuz traffic still thin: Six commodity ships crossed the strait on Monday, three entering and three exiting the Gulf, Kpler shipping data cited by Reuters showed, well below the 10-day average of 11 ships. No very large crude carriers or LNG tankers passed through, though some vessels may be crossing with transponders switched off and going uncounted. Among those tracked, a large gas carrier entered the strait empty via the Iranian route, while other tankers moved fuel, LPG and bulk cargo in and out of the Gulf.
Bab el-Mandeb crossings also down: At the Bab el-Mandeb chokepoint on the other side of the Arabian Peninsula, 19 commodity vessels transited on Monday, down from a 10-day average of 26 and well below Sunday's 33 crossings, according to the data. Of these, five entered the Red Sea and 14 exited.
Notable vessels tracked: Among the ships exiting Bab el-Mandeb was the VLCC Norns, carrying 2 million barrels of oil, Reuters reported. Two liquid tankers, Admiral and Portofino, were among those entering the Red Sea, with the Portofino carrying diesel bound for markets west of Suez.

Oil climbs as fading US-Iran peace hopes raise supply risks

Oil prices climbed on Tuesday as hopes for a Middle East peace deal faded further, with Iran signalling a shift to a more aggressive military stance and the United States ruling out an extension to a temporary ceasefire, fuelling fresh worries over energy supply.

Key points:

Prices rise on stalled talks: Brent crude gained 0.7% to $91.49 a barrel, its highest since 30 July, while US WTI crude rose to $85.25 a barrel. A senior Iranian official told Reuters that Tehran would adopt a "fully offensive" military posture, with efforts to end the war stalled and Washington declining to extend the truce.
Hormuz traffic stays thin: Tanker crossings through the Strait of Hormuz remain in the single digits despite a slight rise over the weekend. A vessel was struck by a projectile while leaving the strait on Tuesday, the latest in a series of attacks in the waterway.
Houthi attack in Red Sea: Yemen's Houthi forces said they fired missiles at a Saudi military ship and its escort vessels in the Red Sea, according to their military spokesperson, adding to regional tensions.
Iran-Oman talks and Trump's threat: Iran says it is close to a separate deal with Oman on managing the Strait of Hormuz, but Trump responded by threatening to bomb the Gulf state, a longtime US security partner. Analysts expect oil to trade between $80 and $100 a barrel near term, with the lack of a deal likely to weigh on price expectations into 2027.

Zambia President Hichilema re-elected for second term following contentious polls

Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has won a second five-year term, according to the Associated Press, after the country's Electoral Commission declared him the outright winner of last week's presidential vote. He cleared the 50 per cent threshold needed to avoid a run-off, AP reported, in an election that was marked by a temporary halt in vote counting and a security crackdown on opposition figures.

Result and vote count:
Hichilema secured just over 2.96 million votes against roughly 1.86 million for his closest rival, opposition leader Brian Mundubile. Electoral Commission chairperson Mwangala Zaloumis formally named Hichilema president-elect on August 18, 2026.

Disruption and opposition crackdown:
Vote counting was suspended last Friday after officials reported attacks on polling station staff and the theft of ballot papers, before resuming hours later under tighter security. AP also noted that several senior opposition figures were detained on election night, with police citing state security concerns, while Mundubile said his home was raided by police and claimed his life had been threatened.

Donald Trump threatens to bomb Oman if it ‘gets in the way’ of ending Iran war

President Trump has once again threatened military action against Oman if the Gulf nation stands in the way of his push to end the US-Israel conflict with Iran. The renewed threat came as a two-month deadline for a negotiated settlement with Tehran passed on Monday with no deal reached, underlining how Trump's blunt approach to diplomacy has strained ties with US partners without delivering the resolution he had promised.

Three key points:

Threat against Oman: Trump told Fox News he would take harsh military action against Oman, a country not involved in the war but which has long served as a go-between for Washington and Tehran, if it interfered with his efforts. It's the second time he's aimed this kind of warning at Muscat.
Deadline passes without a deal: The 60-day negotiating window Trump set with Iran, agreed at Versailles in June, expired without a comprehensive agreement on sanctions, Iran's nuclear program, or other disputes. Despite this, Trump said he was in no rush to close a deal and pushed back on the idea of setting a new deadline.
Wider regional strain: The conflict continues to ripple outward Yemen's Houthi forces claimed a missile and drone strike on Saudi military vessels in the Red Sea near the Bab-al-Mandeb strait, while in Israel, Jared Kushner spent hours with Netanyahu after the Israeli PM rejected a US-backed Gaza peace plan that called for Israeli troop withdrawal before Hamas disarms.

Trump cites India's voter cards to make case for SAVE America Act

India's Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar recently asked the US administration how elections in America can be held without a valid photo identification card, President Donald Trump said, making a case for mandatory photo IDs for every US voter to curb "electoral fraud".

Trump, in a post on Truth Social, further said less than one per cent of voters in India used postal ballots in the recent general elections, and every voter had a valid photo identity document.

The US president made these remarks to drum up support for the SAVE America Act which would require Americans to show proof of citizenship to register to vote, impose a nationwide voter identification requirement and severely limit voting by mail.

"Earlier this month, India's Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, asked our Administration - How can you have Elections in the US without a valid Photo ID," Trump wrote. "India's last Election had 646,000,000 Voters! Less than one per cent voted by mail, and every single Voter had to have a VALID Photo Identity Document." "We need to pass THE SAVE AMERICA ACT, now," he asserted.

Trump has been insisting on passing the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act, claiming the move would curb electoral fraud.

One fake X post from India. An Iranian nuclear claim. Then Netanyahu cited it

The US and Iran aren't fighting only with missiles. Alongside strikes and the standoff over the Strait of Hormuz, a quieter battle is playing out online, where unverified claims are being amplified across borders and, in some cases, entering the political discourse around fragile ceasefire talks.

The New York Times traced one recent example in detail. A claim about Iran's nuclear programme began on an obscure corner of the internet and, within hours, spread to prominent media outlets in Israel and the US. It was later cited in a speech by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and shared online by Mike Waltz, the Trump administration's ambassador to the United Nations.

Trump says US in contact with IRGC and calls on Iran to surrender

US President Trump has demanded that Iran "surrender," telling Fox News on Monday that Tehran should raise the "white flag" in the five-month US-Israel war, just as the US-Iran memorandum of understanding aimed at ending hostilities expired without renewal. While claiming his administration opened a direct backchannel with Iran's Revolutionary Guard, Trump said he's in no rush to strike a deal despite the approaching November midterms even as he threatened to bomb US ally Oman if it "gets in the way" of reopening the blockaded Strait of Hormuz.

Trump's surrender call: Trump said Iran should "put up the white flag of surrender," dismissed any time pressure ("I have no time schedule"), and called the IRGC "good poker players" who are "dying."
MoU expires: The truce that took effect in mid-June lapsed Monday with no extension in sight; both sides accuse each other of violations, and Iran's FM Abbas Araghchi says Tehran has "not yet made a decision to restart negotiations."
Oman threat amid Hormuz talks: Trump threatened to "bomb the s*** out of" Oman if it interferes with reopening the Strait of Hormuz, even as Iran and Oman work on a joint declaration to protect both sovereignty and commercial shipping through the waterway.
