Parliament Monsoon Session Live: 12 Bills passed, only one discussed in Lok Sabha

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said 12 Bills were passed during Monsoon Session, however, only one saw discussion in both Houses.

The Monsoon Session of the Parliament ended on Thursday as the proceedings remained disrupted in the two Houses amid protests from the Opposition. The Opposition parties also boycotted the customary tea event at Speaker’s chamber following the adjournment. The ongoing session saw frequent disruptions amid the Opposition calling for a discussion on alleged police brutality on protesters at Jantar Mantar, Ayodhya Ram Mandir donation row, among other issues.

The motif behind the disruption has been the Opposition calling for Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement on the alleged police excesses during the July 20 protest at Jantar Mantar. Shah on Wednesday said he is willing to answer to the Opposition’s question even as parties demanded his statement in the Parliament.

While speaking to reporters outside the Parliament, he said, “The Opposition should, in writing, tell the Speaker whether they want to have a discussion or not by 2 pm today (till the Lok Sabha is adjourned). We are in favour of discussion till late night today as well as tomorrow.”

Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi hit back at Shah, accusing him of being absent for the past 20 days and saying they were now making a last-ditch attempt to revive their position. “The balloon has burst, and now, at the last moment, they are trying to refill the gas. Amit Shah has no courage, the home minister has no courage,” Gandhi said.

The Parliament on Wednesday cleared Bill to rename Kerala as Keralam and the NCDC Amendment Bill. So far, the Parliament has cleared at least 19 Bills, seven of which were passed in 36 minutes without discussion.

Chandrasekhar slams LDF, UDF MPs' absence during passage of Kerala renaming Bill

BJP Kerala president Rajeev Chandrasekhar criticised LDF and UDF MPs for being absent from Parliament during the passage of the Bill to rename Kerala as Keralam, calling it a long-pending demand of the people.

Addressing a press conference in Delhi, Chandrasekhar said the BJP was "very proud" that the demand had moved towards becoming law so quickly after the party had raised it with Prime Minister Narendra Modi some time ago.

12 Bills passed by Parliament, Lok Sabha productivity 19%: Kiren Rijiju

Govt's stubbornness led to Bills being forcibly passed: SP MP Ramgopal Yadav

Speaking on the ongoing Monsoon Session of the Parliament, Samajwadi Party MP Ramgopal Yadav, said, "The government’s stubbornness has resulted in several Bills being forcibly passed during the entire session. Ideally, no Bill should be passed in the manner in which these Bills have been pushed through. There are rules and conventions governing such legislation... Those in power should never allow their ego or stubbornness to come in the way of the Opposition’s legitimate demands."

That is how Parliament functions. The Opposition simply cannot accept this, no matter how often the ruling party claims that the Opposition is running away.
