President John Dramani Mahama has officially welcomed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Ghana for a landmark two-day state visit—the first by an Indian Prime Minister in three decades.

Taking to Facebook shortly after Modi’s arrival, President Mahama wrote:

“I welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi to our beautiful country this afternoon for a two-day official visit.

This is the first visit by an Indian PM to Ghana in 30 years and we are looking forward to very productive bilateral engagements on various areas of cooperation between our two countries.”

The visit marks a significant diplomatic moment, signalling strengthened ties between the two nations.

According to earlier reports by MyNewsGh, Prime Minister Modi’s itinerary includes bilateral talks with President Mahama, an address to Parliament, and the signing of multiple agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) focused on trade, technology, education, and health.

A key highlight of the visit will be a special ceremony where Ghana will honour Prime Minister Modi with the Order of the Star of Ghana—the country’s highest national award.

The honour places him among distinguished international leaders including Jacques Chirac of France, Kenya’s President William Ruto, and Côte d’Ivoire’s former President Laurent Gbagbo.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa officially announced the visit and the award at a press briefing on Monday, July 1, in Accra, noting the significance of India-Ghana relations and the potential for deeper collaboration across multiple sectors.
