Obuasi SHTS: Manasseh alleges school officials failed to act promptly on abuse report
by Miss Naa · MyNewsGh.comInvestigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has questioned the conduct of school officials at Obuasi Senior High Technical School, alleging that some authorities failed to act promptly after being informed of sexual abuse allegations involving a female student.
Manasseh said information gathered during his investigation raised questions about how reports were handled and whether those responsible followed the required procedures to protect the student.
He cited the account of a senior housemistress who said she became aware of an alleged rape incident on Sunday but did not report it to the next-in-command until Tuesday evening.
“Now the question is, if all you had to do was to report this rape incident to the next in command to take action, and then this thing happened on Saturday, it was brought to your attention on Sunday, you didn’t report,” he said on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show.
Manasseh said the delay raised concerns about the response of officials who held positions of responsibility within the school.
He also referred to allegations that a housemistress had advised a student who reported an alleged assault not to tell anyone. According to Manasseh, the account featured in his documentary and required scrutiny as part of the wider investigation.
He said the handling of the reports contributed to pressure on people who were trying to secure justice for the students.
“There were things they were supposed to do that they didn’t do. And because of that, there was a lot of pressure and victimisation against the focal person, the girl child coordinator and those who were bent on getting justice for these girls,” he said.
