High Court dismisses case against Kwesi Nyantakyi over prosecution’s failure to present Anas

Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President, Kwesi Nyantakyi, has been discharged by the High Court in his long-running trial linked to the Number 12 exposé.

The court’s decision comes after state prosecutors failed to present investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, a key witness in the case, to testify against Nyantakyi.

Nyantakyi was facing charges of conspiracy to commit fraud, fraud, and corruption following his involvement in the undercover documentary, which exposed alleged corrupt dealings in African football.

The exposé captured him accepting money from an undercover journalist posing as a businessman, with promises to use his political connections—including then-President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo—to facilitate business opportunities.

He was also accused of influencing player selections for the Ghana national team through bribery.

The trial faced repeated delays due to legal disputes over whether Anas should testify while wearing his trademark mask. Initially, the High Court ruled that Anas should reveal his face in chambers to Nyantakyi before testifying in open court with his mask on. However, the Court of Appeal overturned this ruling, ordering Anas to testify without any face covering.

On Thursday, February 13, 2025, state prosecutors requested a one-month adjournment, stating they needed advice from the Attorney General as they were unable to produce Anas. In response, Nyantakyi’s legal team urged the court to dismiss the case due to the prosecution’s inability to proceed.
