Akufo-Addo was a bad president – NPP’s Arthur Kennedy bares teeth
by Miss Naa · MyNewsGh.comFormer NPP presidential aspirant Dr Kobina Arthur Kennedy has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to focus on the future rather than make former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s record a central feature of its campaign ahead of the 2028 general election.
He argued that the party must recognise the electoral consequences of the former president’s time in office and avoid relying on his achievements or political appeal to win back voters.
Speaking to TV3’s Alfred Ocansey, Dr Arthur Kennedy said political parties often distance themselves from former leaders whose records have become unpopular with voters.
“Politics is about the future. So when somebody becomes toxic, you put him in the background,” he said.
He stressed that his criticism was directed at Akufo-Addo’s performance as president, not his personal character, describing him as an effective campaigner who had nevertheless performed poorly in office.
“He can read a speech better than virtually every politician in Ghana’s history except one. But he was a bad president,” he said.
Dr Arthur Kennedy cited the unfinished National Cathedral project, the failure to operationalise Agenda 111 hospitals and concerns about corruption as issues the party should confront when assessing its past administration.
He said the NPP should not assume that the record which contributed to its 2024 defeat could become the basis for an electoral comeback.
“If I were leading the campaign, that is one of the things I would not be emphasising,” he said, referring to the former president’s record.
