Dr. Isaac Bampoe Addo urges African Youth to view leadership as allies, not enemies

The Executive Secretary of Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) and Chairman of the Public Service International (PSI) National Coordinating Committee, Dr. Isaac Bampoe Addo, has called on African youth, particularly young workers, to refrain from viewing their leaders as enemies.

“Youth workers should not rush to remove leadership; leadership is not their enemy—government is,” Dr. Bampoe Addo stated.

He further urged young workers to exercise patience and focus on acquiring the necessary knowledge to effectively engage in this struggle, adding that success in this fight is unattainable without a solid foundation of knowledge.

Dr. Bampoe Addo made these remarks at the Young Workers Regional Conference for Africa and Arab Countries, organized by the PSI National Coordinating Council in Cape Coast.

The event, which aimed to educate and mentor young workers to assume leadership roles within the trade union movement, was attended by delegates from 15 countries, with 70 participants in total.

The theme of the conference was “Young Workers Strengthening the Trade Union Movement.”

Dr. Bampoe Addo also highlighted the rising unemployment rates in many African countries, which have led to increased exploitation of workers by employers.

He pointed out that, given these challenges, the only way to overcome the dire situation is for unions to remain strong.

“The reality facing employees is harsh, but the hope for overcoming this situation lies in the strength of unions,” he added.

During the conference, the PSI National Coordinating Council launched the Young Workers Education and Mentorship Programme (YEMP), which aims to equip the youth with the tools needed for future growth within the unions.

The program reflects the belief that young workers hold the key to the long-term success of the movement.

The Vice President of PSI, Prince Peters Adeyemi, also addressed the youth, encouraging them to broaden their knowledge both locally and internationally.

This, he said, would enable them to reach the highest levels of education and leadership.

“The youth of today will be the leaders of tomorrow. PSI has developed a structure that will allow the youth to gradually occupy leadership roles as they become available,” Adeyemi remarked.

He concluded by acknowledging the impatience often felt by the youth, urging them to understand that moving too quickly from one position to another may not yield the desired outcomes.

“Youth today are eager and want to move quickly, but to achieve our objectives, we must approach the process gradually,” he added.
