Baffour Awuah was the aggressor in EOCO confrontation – Benjamin Aidoo
by Miss Naa · MyNewsGh.comPress Secretary at the Office of the Attorney General Benjamin Alpha Aidoo has criticised Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah’s conduct during his confrontation with an Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) official.
Mr Aidoo said the video of the encounter showed the MP as the aggressor, while also questioning why he drove to Parliament after initially telling the woman he would follow her.
“I’m ashamed to say this, that in this instance, with the greatest of respect to him, he didn’t commit himself in glory because the whole video shows that he was the aggressor,” he said on New Day on TV3.
“He was the aggressor in the whole video and he also had earlier told the woman after the conversation they had had that he was going to follow her.”
Mr Aidoo said Mr Awuah subsequently remained in his vehicle and drove away to Parliament.
“He actually sped off to Parliament confirming the woman’s suspicion, the basis for which she wanted to lead him into the car,” he said.
He acknowledged that the manner in which the incident unfolded could have been better but maintained that the conduct of the encounter should not be used to conclude that the arrest itself was unlawful.
“The whole scene was untidy,” he said, while maintaining that this did not by itself invalidate the arrest process.
Mr Aidoo also said the decision by EOCO officers to retreat helped prevent the confrontation from escalating.
He said investigative agencies often have more information about their operations than is publicly known and urged Mr Awuah to engage with the agency rather than resist the process.
