This is a national tragedy – Gov’t confirms death of 8 in helicopter crash

The Government of Ghana has confirmed the death of eight individuals following a tragic military helicopter crash that occurred on the morning of Wednesday, August 6, around the Adansi area in the Ashanti Region.

In a solemn statement delivered on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama and Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah described the incident as a national tragedy that has deeply shaken the country.

“On behalf of the President of the Republic, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, the Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, who is with us here, and the Government of Ghana, I have the unpleasant duty, sadly, to announce a national tragedy involving the crash of a military helicopter,” Mr. Debrah said.

Government expressed regret in announcing the loss of the following individuals in the crash:

  1. Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah – Minister for Defence
  2. Alhaji Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed (MP) – Minister for Environment, Science and Technology
  3. Alhaji Muniru Mohammed – Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator and former Minister for Food and Agriculture
  4. Dr Samuel Sarpong – Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)
  5. Samuel Aboagye – Former Parliamentary Candidate
  6. Squadron Leader Peter Baafemi Anala – Crew Member
  7. Flying Officer Manaen Twum-Ampadu – Crew Member
  8. Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah – Crew Member

“The President and Government extend our condolences and sympathies to the families of our comrades and servicemen who died in service to the country,” Mr. Debrah added.
