Arthur Kennedy blames Akufo-Addo’s eight-year rule for NPP’s 2024 defeat

Former NPP presidential aspirant Dr Kobina Arthur Kennedy has blamed the party’s defeat in the 2024 general election on the poor performance of the Nana Akufo-Addo administration, arguing that the party must confront its record in government rather than focus on security concerns.

Speaking in an interview with TV3 journalist Alfred Ocansey, he said the NPP lost because voters were dissatisfied with its eight years in power, not because it lacked a strong enough vigilante force.

“The fact of the matter is that they didn’t have enough votes because they spent eight years governing badly and people were unhappy,” he said.

Dr Arthur Kennedy cited the decision of about 1.25 million NPP supporters to vote for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, John Dramani Mahama, as evidence of the party’s electoral problem.

He argued that the NPP should focus on winning back those voters instead of assuming that a stronger security or vigilante operation would return it to power.

“You think those people will come home because you have met your men? Of course not. They were voting for John Mahama,” he said.

He also pointed to estimates that millions of eligible voters stayed away from the polls, alongside public dissatisfaction with both major political parties, as warning signs the NPP must take seriously.

Dr Arthur Kennedy said the party should examine the decisions and policies that contributed to its defeat rather than promote the record of the previous administration as a winning formula for 2028.

“The people knew the things that he did was what took us out of power. So this idea that what he did will bring us back to power is neither here nor there,” he added.
