My political future is at stake if Kennedy Agyapong becomes President – Adwoa Safo
by Gabs · MyNewsGh.comFormer Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya, Hon. Sarah Adwoa Safo, has disclosed that her political future would be in jeopardy if Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, were to become President, explaining that her decision on whom to support within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is guided by competence, ideology, and political survival rather than personal relationships.
Speaking openly on her political stance, Hon. Adwoa Safo stressed that politics is driven by ambition and differing worldviews, noting that politicians naturally align themselves with leaders under whom they believe they can thrive.
“I am a politician and Kennedy Agyapong is also a politician. We all have different mindsets,” she said. “Kennedy Agyapong has his ambition and I also have mine. Because of that, we all go to places where we will have our peace and support who we want.”
She was quick to clarify that her position should not be interpreted as personal hostility toward Kennedy Agyapong, revealing that they share family ties.
“I do not hate Kennedy Agyapong,” she stated. “I have two kids with him, a boy and a girl. But in politics, we do not do family and friends.”
According to her, the NPP governance challenges partly stem from excessive reliance on personal relationships rather than competence, a practice she says she has resolved never to engage in.
“We are in opposition to learn,” she said. “We went into government to do family and friends, and I have sworn that I will not do anything like family and friends. I support who is competent and who can do the work.”
Hon. Adwoa Safo highlighted her long-standing service to the NPP and the country, questioning why her experience and contributions should be sidelined in internal political considerations.
“I started contesting to be an MP in 2007,” she noted. “Since then, I have served this party. I have been a Member of Parliament for twelve years. I have been a Deputy Majority Leader. I have served as a Minister for Procurement and also as Minister for Gender. Haven’t I served?”
She acknowledged that Kennedy Agyapong has also made his own contributions to the party but argued that political realities would limit her prospects under his leadership.
“Let’s assume he wins power and sees my CV and the work I have done for this party and for Ghana,” she said. “If he decides to appoint me as a minister for something, there would be chaos in Ghana. He will never do that.”
According to Hon. Adwoa Safo, this reality places her political ambition and future at risk, informing her decision to back former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
“My political ambition is at stake. My future is at stake,” she declared. “That is why I have chosen to support Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, because it is with him that my future lies.”
