Obuasi SHTS case: Police must secure court order for DNA test – Muntaka
by Miss Naa · MyNewsGh.comInterior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak has explained that investigators must obtain a court order before conducting DNA tests in the sexual assault case involving Obuasi Senior High Technical School headmaster Zakaria Abdulai.
He said the police were pursuing the investigation but had to comply with legal requirements, including securing judicial authorisation for DNA testing.
“To even take the DNA, the law requires that we have to go to court to secure a court order before we can do that,” he said when he said appeared before Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC).
Muntaka disclosed that the headmaster had been arrested and had given a statement to investigators, while efforts were underway to obtain DNA evidence.
He said investigators had also been able to reach one of the alleged victims, but cautioned against disclosing too much information while the case remained under investigation.
The Interior Minister stressed that the allegations must be investigated thoroughly while the rights of the accused are respected.
“One of the things that our democracy provides all of us is that you are not guilty until proven beyond reasonable doubt that you are guilty,” he said.
He acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations but insisted that the investigation must follow the law to ensure the case is properly handled.
Muntaka said the matter had been transferred to Police Headquarters from the regional level and expressed confidence that investigators would pursue it to its conclusion.
