Temper justice with mercy – NPP Ashanti Vice Chairman appeals to Mahama over Wontumi
by Miss Naa · MyNewsGh.comThe First Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region, Kwabena Nsenkyire, has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to show compassion following the 20-year prison sentence handed to Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Speaking in an interview with JoyNews, Nsenkyire described the sentence as excessive and said it had left party members disappointed.
“It is very bad news. You can see everyone here, those yet to go through vetting and those of us who have completed ours. We are all unhappy. We are deeply disappointed, and even the 20-year sentence is too harsh,” he said.
Nsenkyire urged President Mahama to consider intervening in the matter.
“So I’m pleading with President John Dramani Mahama; he should temper justice with mercy and do something about it,” he said.
Chairman Wontumi was sentenced after being convicted in a case linked to an anti-illegal mining operation at the Samreboi concession in April 2025. Prosecutors argued that, as the owner and controlling director of Akonta Mining Company Limited, he allowed mining activities to be carried out on the concession without the required approval from the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources.
The operation led to the arrest of Michael Ayisi Gyedu and 28 others. Authorities also recovered 25 serviceable excavators, firearms, vehicles and GH¢157,000 in cash.
