Iran waits for US response after Trump rejects Tehran’s Hormuz proposal
by Gabs · MyNewsGh.comIranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi insists a negotiated agreement remains the only way to end the conflict with the United States, despite President Donald Trump rejecting Tehran’s proposal on the Strait of Hormuz.
Araghchi said Iran was waiting for mediators to communicate the US position before deciding its next step.
“We are waiting for the mediators to convey the definitive views to us, and we will make a decision based on them,” he said in a post on Telegram.
Trump had rejected Iran’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz as part of efforts to end the fighting, saying the offer was not acceptable and insisting that a deal should be reached within seven days.
Araghchi said Tehran’s position had already been outlined in a June memorandum of understanding and questioned what he described as contradictory positions from Washington.
Iran had proposed ending hostilities and reopening the strategically important waterway as part of negotiations during the UN General Assembly.
The Strait of Hormuz is a major route for global energy supplies, with roughly a fifth of the world’s oil and gas shipments normally passing through it. Its closure since February has contributed to higher oil and fuel prices.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has also said the distrust created by the conflict must be addressed, while calling for assurances that Washington does not intend to overthrow Iran’s government.
He said Iran remained open to implementing the memorandum of understanding in stages.
Oman, which has played a mediating role, has also called for continued dialogue between the two sides.
