Two-time Ballon d’Or winner and Liverpool legend Kevin Keegan is dead

In a statement, his family said Keegan passed away surrounded by his wife and daughters, describing him as a “much-loved husband, father and grandfather.”
Keegan rose to prominence after joining Liverpool in 1971 under manager Bill Shankly. During his time at Anfield, he won three First Division titles, the FA Cup, two UEFA Cups and the European Cup in 1977, scoring 100 goals in 323 appearances.
He later moved to Hamburg, where he won the Bundesliga and was named European Footballer of the Year, now known as the Ballon d’Or, in 1978 and 1979.
Keegan also enjoyed spells with Southampton and Newcastle United before retiring as a player. He earned 63 caps for England, scoring 21 goals, and captained the national team.
After retiring, he moved into management, guiding Newcastle to promotion to the Premier League and coming close to winning the 1995/96 league title. He also managed England, Manchester City and Fulham.
Liverpool, Hamburg and Newcastle were among the clubs to pay tribute to Keegan following news of his death.
