Mahama travelling in a private jet did not cost the taxpayer a dime – Ofosu Kwakye
by Ayeh Offei-Akoto · MyNewsGh.comA spokesperson for President John Dramani Mahama, Felix Ofosu Kwaye has explained that John Dramani Mahama is flying in his brother’s private jet because the Ghana Air Force is yet to provide him with a report of the state of flights under their watch.
President John Dramani Mahama flew in the Dzata Jet to Senegal and Gambia for a one-day state visit for bilateral discussions.
Concerns have been raised considering the fact that the country has a presidential jet which they believe he could use for his official trips.
But speaking to TV3 in an interview, Felix Ofosu Kwakye explained, “I am sure you are aware that President Mahama is the Commander of the Ghana Armed Forces. Since he became president, he has requested a detailed report of the state of the communications squadron. The Communications squadron is the unit of the Ghana Air Force that handles the presidential aircraft. So he has requested that they give him a brief on the state of the unit itself and the planes under their control and that report is yet to filter in, so pending the receipt of that report, to determine the state of the state aircraft, the president has been travelling the same way he has been travelling in opposition,” he said.
Kwakye Ofosu further explained that the alternative arrangement has in no way affected the taxpayer since the President is aware of the precarious economic situation the country finds herself in.
“The most critical point that has been made has not in any way, shape or form cost the Ghanaian taxpayer a dime. President Mahama is mindful of the precarious situation we are in and is mindful of utilizing public funds in the most prudent of ways. So he is not about to dole out millions of Ghana cedis as used to be the case in the very recent past under the previous government to rent an expensive aircraft to sit in. This aircraft has been available to him since his days in opposition. He has used it; indeed, some of the visits that I referred to in the immediate aftermath of his election as president in December 2024 were undertaken with this aircraft,” he told TV3 in an interview.
Felix Ofosu Kwakye assured the people of Ghana that the President intends to use the presidential jet for his travels immediately he receives a report on the state of the jet from the Ghana Airforce.
