Police say they are attending a sudden death in Lower Hutt.

Officers at the scene were armed as a precaution, police said.

Police said they received a report of a man on the ground outside an address on Malone Road in the suburb of Waterloo at 8.30am on Thursday.

Emergency services at the scene confirmed the man had died.

Police said the immediate area had been cordoned off as they undertook inquiries.

A resident has told RNZ he heard sirens from about 8.30am.

A reporter at the scene said, as well as armed officers, there were people in white forensics suits taking photos of items on the grass berm.

A tent has been set up across the footpath and part of the street, and another marquee has been erected on a property's front garden.

The road is cordoned off between Bauchop Road and Galway Street.
