Second rider dies in a day on Hunter roads

A second rider has died on the region's roads in a day after a crash in the Hunter Valley at the weekend.

Only hours after a rider yet to be formally identified died in an unrelated crash at Hamilton North Saturday morning, July 11, police reported a second rider had died after a crash involving a car just south of Kurri Kurri the same afternoon.

The 58-year-old was treated at the scene by paramedics but could not be revived, police said. A report will be prepared for the coroner.

The driver of the other vehicle - a 72-year-old woman - was take to John Hunter Hospital for mandatory testing.

Police were called to the scene on Leggetts Drive at Pelaw Main about 2.45pm.

Just before 8pm, officers remained on the scene with Leggetts Drive closed to traffic in both directions.

Police established a crime scene and their investigations were continuing on Saturday evening, a spokesperson for the force said.

Drivers have been told to avoid the area.

Diversions were in place via the M1 Pacific Motorway and the Hunter Valley Expressway. Drivers have been advised to check LiveTraffic and allow extra time.
