Where is the Green Sheep? comes to Civic Theatre in July, billed especially as a first theatre experience for young children. Picture supplied.

An immersive children's show staged at the Civic Theatre next month promises to bring a beloved tale from celebrated author Mem Fox to life.

Where is the Green Sheep has been billed as a gateway for children aged one to six to experience the educational and developmental benefits of live theatre.

The tale brings classic children's book characters to life through a troupe of puppeteers commanding a vibrant and animated stage and fluffy cast.

Production company Monkey Baa (Possum Magic, 2023; Josephine wants to Dance 2025) will revive its July through December run of the same show, which was nominated for the Sydney Theatre Awards best children's production last year.

Audiences will meet Blue Sheep, Red Sheep, Bath Sheep and Bed Sheep in the adaptation of the 190-word original text in search of the elusive Green Sheep.

Over 36 shows last year, the company's annual report boasts bring more than 13,000 audience members into theatres to experience the story.

"What is a wonderful aspect of this production though, is that generations can enjoy it together," Company co-founder and artistic director Eva Di Cesare said.

"Grandparents, parents and their children share in the experience. There is something for everyone.

"Families who love high quality storytelling and grandparents who want to share experiences. Its enjoyable and affordable and perfect for children as young as one year old."

The performance blends puppetry and animation to evoke a captivating experience for young audiences, the showrunners said.

"Newcastle is always included as an important and enthusiastic city for Monkey Baa's productions," Ms Di Cesare said.

"For some children is will be their first theatre experience."

"Where is the Green Sheep? is an immersive visual theatre experience based on the beloved children's book by Mem Fox and Judy Horacek."

"We meet Blue Sheep who loves blue flowers and Red Sheep who loves to cartwheel in the fields, Bath Sheep who loves bubbles and Bed Sheep who loves to bounce. But where is that Green Sheep?"

Where is the Green Sheep? opens at Civic Theatre on a three-day run from July 9. Tickets start at $37. Booking details are available via the theatre's website.
