Mayfield: Townhouse fire erupts on Elizabeth Street, Newcastle

Firefighters were battling a townhouse blaze in Newcastle on Wednesday night.

Police, paramedics and fire crews were called to a block of townhouses on Elizabeth Street, backing onto Woodstock Street, at Mayfield, about 5.50pm.

Details of the circumstances of the fire were developing as emergency services remained on the scene into the evening.

Police and paramedics reported there was no one inside at the time of the fire, though paramedics remained on the scene to support firefighters as they brought the fire under control.

Police said there were no initial reports of injuries, and the cause of the fire was still being determined.

Emergency services remained on the scene, just off Bull Street about an hour after the initial calls raised the alarm.
