by · The Cerbat Gem

What happened

Alibaba Group Holding Ltd (NYSE: BABA) said Chief People Officer Fang Jiang sold 885,272 ordinary shares on 09/30/2026. The shares traded at a weighted-average price of $13.55 and totaled about $12.00 million.

The Form 4 uses transaction code S for a sale and says the shares were sold in multiple trades. The footnote says those trades ranged from HK$105.70 to HK$107.00, converted at HK$7.84593 to US$1.00.

After the sale, Fang Jiang held 4,679,097 shares directly and 23,116,864 shares indirectly by trust. The weighted average came from multiple trades, not a single print.

Why it matters

OptimistFi's case is that Alibaba's dominant China commerce marketplace, growing cloud and services franchise, and strong balance sheet can still turn scale into recurring revenue and eventual margin and cash recovery. This filing is mixed for that view because Fang Jiang sold shares, but still held a large stake afterward.

The sale removed 885,272 shares, but it did not end Fang Jiang's position. The filing shows 4,679,097 direct shares after the sale and 23,116,864 indirect shares held by trust.

The sale covered about 15.9% of Fang Jiang's pre-trade direct holding, based on the reported shares sold and the post-sale balance. That is a sizable trim, but not an exit. A single insider sale does not prove a negative view on Alibaba's operating margin or cash flow path.

What's next

The next quarterly report is the next scheduled check on whether operating margins and cash flow are stabilizing. A report that shows less profit compression would strengthen the case, while another weak quarter would weaken it.

The same report will also show whether cash flow recovery is taking hold. Until then, this Form 4 sets a baseline for Fang Jiang's direct and indirect holdings after the sale.

It is a snapshot of one officer's trading, not a read on Alibaba's business results for now.
